Yoga & weightlifting:compatible?

Question:

I just started studying Yoga a few weeks ago, mainly to reduce feelings of tension and stress. Yesterday, I signed up at a local gym where I can use all kinds of exercise equipment, including weights. Are yoga and strenuous physical exercise in the form of lifting weights compatible? Is it OK to do both or will weightlifting somehow contradict the good effects of yoga?

If your goal is to reduce feelings of tension and stress, then weightlifting and hatha yoga is very compatible if combined wisely. Muscle growth needn’t mean loss of flexibility (Have you ever heard of Flex Wheeler? He is one of the most muscular people in the world, yet does full splits during his routines.)  If you try immediately stretching a muscle group after you’ve worked it (i.e. after doing a set of leg [hamstring] curls, then immediately do a hamstring stretch) I predict that you’ll find that you can stretch further at that moment than if you had tried to do the stretch "cold".  Not only is this a productive way to become more flexible, but some people think that this is the most effective way to get muscular growth and increased strength.   "Spending" energy is a great way to reduce stress, especially if combined with stretching and relaxing.  It’s when you want to "invest" energy yogically in specific ways that you might want to curtail "spending" energy in other ways, but I don’t think that, with your goals (and being a beginner), you have to worry about this.                                 –Mark

Indeed! – I can feel really ‘tight’ after a weights workout, need to burn off the lactic acid, etc… about 10-20 minutes asanas on a mat in the gym stretches me off nicely… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I just started studying Yoga a few weeks ago, mainly to reduce feelings of tension and stress. No, it’s not a contradiction.Hari Har Singh

I’ve practiced yoga for over twenty years and have also been going to a gym for that time. For me, it’s better to go to yoga first, then the gym rather than the gym first then yoga. But see which order works for you.

Response:

Weightlifting and Yoga are compatible. I prefer to do my yoga first because I feel relaxed, warmed up, focused and calmly energized.  And as I lift, I breath deeply, breaking up sets with yoga www.globalthink.com/yoga)
