I was given vicodin 750 and used it 3 times a day.  Also literally slept in the bathtub.  Happily it went away in a month so I got rid of the pain killers  but now I am addicted to hot baths several hours a day.  Welcome to the group  there are some really knowledgabe people here     Ruth

My sciatic thingy has driven me nutz for a month at a time. Is there any other way besides a chiropractor to make it better? It goes out/bad at the most inopportune times. Last time I had great tickets to a Brian Adams concert and I lifted something  three hours before the concert and ended up moaning on the floor. No way was I going to miss it but it was brutal to go and sit through it. My one and only experience with a chiropractor was awful. When he was finished trying to break me I asked if he’d ever killed anyone and he didn’t appreciate it. What exercise works specifically for the problem? catherine MADKELLY <madke…@aol.com

Hi Gwen  and Welcome – I’ve utilized chiropractic care for sciatic issues.  I also have an

inversion

table which lets you hang upside down (or at a more palatable angle) and relieves the pressure.  IMHO, proper exercise is the only way to manage

this

long term.  Drugs will help the symptoms, but don’t usually do anything to

heal

nerve pain. to our health kelly

I have found that some of the gentle yoga stretches help my hip tremendously though mine is not specifically sciatica but tendonitis around the hip joint.  There is no "cure" for it otherwise, meds only take the edge off.  The yoga has been wonderful and I can wake up with my hip hurting, stretch for a few minutes and it is back to "normal". If you’d like to write me personally I can describe the stretches I use (as they are variations on the standard yoga stretches because I do them on the bed rather than on the floor)

It goes out/bad at the most inopportune times. Last time I had great tickets to a Brian Adams concert and I lifted something  three hours before the concert and ended up moaning on the floor.

Do you *know* the pain is eminating from the sciatic nerve or could it be that you have a swollen lumbar disk?  The latter sounds more plausible frankly and I have experienced it (yes, excruciating pain). I usually set mine off by trying to stretch up tall to reach something on a shelf of something equally unnecessary.   the lumbar thing tends to feel like it’s in the hip but you can sometimes feel the source closer to the spine.   If it’s actually in the hip there are some good yoga stretches that can relieve some of the pressure (done lying down, not standing) but in the lumbar spine you have to be a little more careful.  your standard "pelvic tilt" can help the lumbar situation over a period of time but the first few times you do it you might experience considerable discomfort.  Rather than a chiropractor (like you’ve I’ve not had good experiences there but a lot of people have) you might want to talk to an orthopedic doc *Or* your GP should have a small pamphlet on back exercises and keeping your back healthy.  Every GP I’ve ever seen has had those booklets available.  There are several mild exercises that can be done to improve the support muscles around the lumbar spine and keep you from getting into trouble.  Of course, they have to be done regularly. :) take care and HTH, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.  The contents of this post are based soley on my experiences and opinions http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/mypage.htm http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq20.htm   ("`-”-/").___..–”"`-._   (`6_ 6  )   `-.  (     ).`-.__.’`)    (_Y_.)’  ._   )  `._ `. “-..-”   _..`–’_..-_/  /–’_.’ ,’ (()),-”  (()),’    (((.-’

HI–I do not know if most do or do not have this. But I know I do–I have twoo herniated discs[L-4 and L-5 and deteriating discs] I take flexerall one every twelve hours for spasms plus many other meds; I also use a Hydroculator[moist heat pack[ and Chiropractor aznd walking when I can. None of this helps all the way but then most stuff doesnt. I just try to take it w/a grain of salt and use bedrest when necessary. I do not know if this helps but I do want to say at the same time Welcome!!! Take Care Lar

Response:

I forgot about the codiene thing. I am and have allergic re-actions to codiene [Tylenol w/codeine  etc.] but for some reason Vicodene ES which I can take 1 every 12 hrs also does not give me a allergic re-action–LAr

Response:

Yes I suffer from it and Doc sent me to a therapist who gave me a group of exercise which give’s me relief, altho it never completely goes away.

Response:

Hi, and welcome I have this problem as well as other nerve related pain. I have a disc pressing on my cervical spine and one pressing as well as one flattened out completely in my lower back. I have had physical therapy, it really didn’t help. The only relief I have gotten was from high doses of Prednisone but I developed Diabetes type 2 and Cushing’s disease as a result of high Pred so I have to get off it now. I saw a nero surgeon  he said they are not bad enough to operate on and to learn how to deal with the pain i.e. pain management….  I do have vicadin and darvon and ibuprofen 800.  But they don’t always help. The nerve pain is the hardest to relieve in my case anyway. Cindy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Janers wrote:

Gwen,  I think maybe you should have this evaluated with a neurologist…when someone has nerve pain that extends down from their hip into the leg, it may mean there is nerve involvement coming off the lower spinal column…It may be a ruptured or bulging disc…I know been there, and had my fixed. To start with the doc ordered physical therapy, and I had to use ice on the low part of the spine and alternate it with heat… But first you need to find out what is causing this and a doc is in order here… Allergic to codiene, the doc can give you many different pain meds. but again you have to know the cause before you really use the meds like pain pills…It will only make the pain less and not cure or treat the cause… Welcome to the lupus NG and hope I have helped..
