Mid-back pain from computer seat?

Question:

lower back pain can be helped with some simple Hatha Yoga stretches – most can be done at work during they day.  You can use the chair you sit on, or even better the floor or a cushion. Some postures are done standing anyway, you use your skeleton and muscles to support yourself not a "special" chair. I was always warned off any health advice which ended "and see my product….." but if you have extreme pain you WILL need support for your lower back. you need to read about them, but heres an idea Lay flat on the floor, arms to the side – rest or Forward bends, fold from the waist down, trying to reach your toes or lay on floor, on front, lift top of body to waist – keeping pelvis on the floor or lay on back, lift legs in the air, be in your shoulders, point legs up as high as possible, bring them over your head and put your feet on the floor behind you.  This KILLS the first few times, so be very very careul doing it tinsy steps at a time Also, go see your doc for physical check up before you do it, IMPORTANT!!! best wishes Sue – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Sarah, Is there any sitting posture that causes pain in your mid-back? There are two main components pain while sitting: Load and Posture Load is the weight of you head and shoulders going through you mid back. Posture (or good posture) refers to the natural curve of your spine. So Here’s a pointer: Sit up straight.  It makes a huge difference. Here’s a statistic from study done by an orthopedic surgeon, Nachemson.  It’s regarding the lower back, but the concept still applies. Intradiscal load measured with a pressure transducer on a 154 lb subject, measured at the 3rd lumbar disc. Pressure while lying: 50 Lbs Pressure while standing: 200 Lbs Pressure while sitting: 300 Lbs Pressure while sitting and slouching: 600 Lbs!!! Here’s the part of my reply where I blantantly plug my product. Check out The Back Seat http://www.thebackseat.com My product holds up you upper body and releives pain while sitting especially for the lower back, but has been shown to relieve pain in the middle back, because that’s where it grabs you. These two things are the most common symptoms of gallstones/gall bladder attacks.  You might want to consult your M.D. and have an ultrasound to rule this out

Good advice.  You should check with your dr.  so that he can rule out any sort of serious problem.  Then, if you get a clean bill of health you need to consider your work station set up. lw

If you are sitting hunched over, that can definitely cause mid-back pain.  However, I wonder about two of your statements 1. that you say it makes you nauseous.  Gall bladder problems refer to the mid back, often around the right shoulder blade.  Gall bladder "attacks" or stones trying to get pushed out of gall bladder or through bile ducts can be a recurring problem, often occurring every few days/weeks. 2. that you say it wakes you up at night.  Gall bladder attacks often occur at night, especially after eating something high in fat, like chinese food. These two things are the most common symptoms of gallstones/gall bladder attacks.  You might want to consult your M.D. and have an ultrasound to rule this out.  Otherwise, consult a chiropractor.  They can check your spine for misalignments, as well as advise you on proper posture, and exercises to correct your problem.  Some even offer physical therapy type modalities such as e-stim and ultrasound that are effective on muscle tightness. Hi, Someone please help! I sometimes wake up with pain in the middle of my back (not lower back). The pain started about 6 months ago, sometimes it goes away for weeks then comes back. Sometimes the pain goes away about an hour after I wake up, but sometimes it continues to hurt me for a day or two. It makes me nauseaus. I think it has something to do with how I sit at the computer desk. Is there any sitting posture that causes pain in your mid-back? Thanks, Sarah

Sarah, Is this at home or at work or both?  How lond do you sit at the computer?  If it is over 2-3 hours per day it is probably the way you work station is set up.  With a little info I think that I might be able to help you.  Maybe you could catch for an IM chat some time.  Would be happy to help. lw
