Feel Stiffer/More Pain
Question:
I couldn’t agree more…I know that yoga is mind/spirit as well as body oriented…just answering initial question about the physical… I can say myself that after slacking off on my own yoga practice for about 2 weeks that I haven’t slept as well, and have been less focused. After doing it tonite, I feel like a new woman, body & spirit!!!

Yes, Chiropractic works well with yoga (it helped me very much when I first got started) but if properly practised yoga does more than stretches soft tsissue. If practised properly it re-educates the nervous system, strengthens muscles, creates stability, generates strength and self confidence, and moves the bones in the joints directly (depending on the asana). Of course it also powerfully affects the brain, emotions, neuroendocrine, organ, and body/mind/spirit integration and dynamics. I am a chiropractor and have been practicing yoga as well. You may want to get your spine & extremities checked for what we call "subluxation" or joint fixation. Yoga stretches all the soft tissues, but if the bony joint loses its mobility, all the stretching in the world won’t loosen that up. I teach all of my patients proper stretching and recommend massage as well, but there is nothing like a good chiropractic adjustment to improve joint mobility and reduce stiffness! Namaste, Kristen Meyer Teagle, D.C. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been practicing asanas for over 10 years, and even tho others who watch me tell me I’m quite flexible, I still feel stiff. Worse, I many times feel charley-horsed the next day. I always get my energy going first thing (deep breathing exercises, then lots of Sun Salutation), and try to practice in a warm room. Even during the ‘Sun’, I take it slow and concentrate on each movement. Is this unusual, or is it just me? (PS – I also do a lot of rollerblading and bicycling. Both counteract a lot of my postures – my muscles are too tight from one form of exercise, and I can’t do enough Yoga to undo the stiffness.) FIDYL S. Fla. Live Simply So That Others May Simply Live

Response:
First you should be clear why are you doing asana practice? What is it that you hope to accomplish? Is it merely to become less stiff? If so what practices make you more flexible? Asana practice is not designed like other Western exercise programs but rather are designed to open the body, the mind, and heart. If you feel in spasm afterwards you may be trying to do too much (or you may be detoxing). Is your diet, blood, and mind purified — Do you meditate also? On a mental level physical tautness is often associated with stress and tension so a de-stress program may be of help? If you enjoy a slow sun salutation with deep breathing it is not unusual. It’s a good sign that you are customizing your practice according to how you feel. The more that we get in touch with our feelings and inner promptings, the greater will be the insight and integration.

If you want to ’stretch out’ you are going to have to do some serious but gentle stretching, whether that be in the form of yoga or something else, on a daily basis. You might also find that by doing asanas in the evening prior sleep the stretch and flexibility stays with you longer. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I’ve been practicing asanas for over 10 years, and even tho others who watch me tell me I’m quite flexible, I still feel stiff.
