Relaxation

Question:

I have been going over all articles since the beginning of March, compliling some comments and addresses into a large Tinnitus file where the information would be easier to find. It has suddenly dawned on me that hardly anybody ever mentions relaxation.  Here in Australia the main thing that seems to help most people in varying degrees is relaxation.  Yes. the other things are mentioned too.  Ginko appears the next favorite. Is there no relaxation ever mentioned out there?

Hello downunder! Here we learn breathing techniques, Feldenrais – Gym, Yoga, relaxation. Gingko is widely used,

I have read 2 books on Feldenkrais, but did not find them very inspiring.  Which parts are recommended? He did have one interesting breathing exercise, which I liked.

With relaxations the muscles and joints, esp. jaw and upper spines, relaxes, pressure on ear reduces.

Thank you, thank you,.  At last, someone who agrees with pressure on ears due to muscular tension. I got the impression from someone else in Germany that the German doctors are very quick with medical treatment.  "5 ml (100 mg) pentoxyfillin in 100 ml saline, infused over about 40 min, in tandem with two of the tablets per day" Regards,   Elly

Hello Elly Yeah yeah, docs in Germany love chemicals, that is why the big pharma companies are so rich. I told my ENT forget the chemical crap unless it helps for sure or at least 80 %. So I got gingko injections and special magnetic treatment. After that they wanted to do that rubbish of infusions, I said no. Because the results are not promising and then got my hbo. Most patients just do as they docs tell them, they do not ask. Sometimes it seems to me that one has to have more knowledge than the doc … It depends on you. However, a lot of health insurance insist on having chemical treatment before trying hbo (because of the costs). My doc had to write to my insurance explaining that in my case chemicals would not help. He himself believes that my T is only caused by muscular tension, bad spine, bad jaw …(but that is enough for me)… Conny P.S: How come that a lot of people do not believe that tension can induce T. It is in most medical books in Germany. Americans what about you? What do you think?

What were the results?

It depends on what you mean by tension.  Most people think of it as stress.  Whatever happens in your life could cause you stress, etc. To me muscular tension is not quite the same thing.  It could be a result of stress. But to me it is often simply a result of what I did during the day, like carrying a 7 month old baby for a few hours.  It sure makes a difference. Elly

In my case my T intensity directly correlates to my level of stress.  If I am stressed, it’s rumbling away.  When I’m truly relaxed, following an acupuncture or massage treatment, my T is virtually gone for hours or maybe a day.  I can’t afford treatments every other day, so I now need to figure out a way of sustaining that "mellow" for at least 3-4 days. Any ideas?

There is an absolute correlation between my stress level and my tinnitus. The higher the stress level the louder the T.  In fact I truly believe my tinnitus is stress induced.  Maybe we should take a poll to see if the majority of people using this newsboard consider themselves Type A or Type B personalities.  Type A = Easily stressed, do it yourselfer, tendency toward perfection.  Type B = Accepts things easily, enlists the help of others, more tolerant of                lifes tribulations.  Bet we have 90% type A  - 10% type B

This sounds interesting, maybe you should.

I would say I am mostly a type A, I am a perfectionist but I do TRY to be tolerant. Stress I believe lowered my resistance to getting tinnitus (virally, not exposure), and it does affect the loudness.  I am currently trying various relaxation strategies to help in this area….. jim mcglynn

Stop thinking about stress and start thinking about muscle tension instead.  Sure there is stress, but stress causes muscle tension. Learn to relax more,  especially the neck and shoulder areas.  Stretch these muscles, massage them, anything to undo the tension in them. After all. that is what the treatment is doing.  Personally I have learnt to hold my body better following The Alexander Method.  And my T increases with muscular effort.  Perhaps you can find what particular effort makes your T worse. Is it reading, writing, computing, driving, sleeping badly, uncomfortable lounge chairs, etc? Elly

How do you meditate with a loud tone in your ears? This may sound defeatist, but I’m struggling with T and how it keeps getting me dowm.Ihad only been meditating for a couple of months before I got T now it’s so distracting .

Joe, Since you have found that massage helps, have you tried Transcendental Meditation, Sylva Mind Control, Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, MD,or Full Catastrophy Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn (I am not sure of this last title) The first two are classes, the last two are books. I recommend them all. Good luck, whatever. Jim New York City

Hello Mike I personally do not meditate according to the books. I just try to make a phantasy trip. Imagining a nice area, vacation, concentrate on one thing, sometimes I only concentrate on my breath, deeply in and out into the belly. Usually over that I fall asleep. You can say (not in speech) I am a relaxed, quiet and positive thinking human. Again and again, till you fall asleep. It helps for me. Conny
