Question:
Acupuncture is equivalent to placebo for anything.
Please provide some evidence for this assertion. — Robert Greenstein What the fool cannot learn he laughs at, thinking of latent idiocy – M. Corelli
Response:
Acupuncture is equivalent to placebo for anything. Please provide some evidence for this assertion. Clinical Journal of Pain, "NCAHF Position Paper on Acupuncture’, July 1991. (if you read japanese, you can read it in IDO-NO-NIPPON) Also see: Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 43:1191-99, 1990 I doubt you’ll actually read them, or be persuaded by them, but there they are. sdb —
Response:
Has anyone had any luck with the herbs and acupuncture? Not for arthritis. Acupuncture is equivalent to placebo for anything. Herbs may or may not help with the pain and inflammation, but probably less effectively than what her MD is giving your friend. Arthritis is probably only second to cancer for the number of quacks out there claiming to cure it. sdb —

Boulder, Colorado I am 31 and was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis almost a year ago. I also have asthma, hypoglycemia and allergies. After feeling absolutely lousy for a year and discovering that the doctor only had medicine that affects other parts of me, I decided to take the matter in my own hands. My M.D. gave me a prescription for Motrin 800 mg. He told me to take 1 3 times a day and to see him in 4 months (unless it got worse). After much reading and talking with other people, I decided one of my primary objectives was to make myself healthier. All of my ailments are aggrevated by diet and stress and thereby suppress my immune system. I had suspected that I may be allergic to milk and wheat and have been trying to eliminate them from my diet (I still have a ways to go). I also made up my mind to do some form of exercise every day no matter how I felt. Fortunately for me I work at a university where there is a gym where I can go at lunchtime and a faculty/staff aerobics program. If I am having a real bad day, I consider just walking to the gym (and no going out to lunch) exercise. If the inflammation is bad I will take some Motrin to help reduce it and then only go to the steamroom at the gym. While in the steamroom (a hot bathtub with epsom salt also works) I just sit there and rub my inflammed joints. It feels SO GOOD. As it starts to get better, I go to the steamroom for 5 minutes, attend class for 15 minutes (very low impact) and then go back to the steamroom (or sauna). After class in the sauna I do some stretching exercises and semi-yoga positions to help maintain flexability. I then gradually increase the amount of time spent in aerobics class. In addition I take 4 g Vit. C (more if I am starting to get sick), a good multivitamin/multimineral, EPA and primrose oil supplement, garlic, and a good balanced calcium/magnesium supplement, and additional dietary fiber. In the four months I have taken only 27 Motrin!! I was by no means perfect, especially during the holidays. I also lost 12 lbs. I really believe that you need to look at what is triggering the immune response and inflammation before you can really treat the disease. In my case, food allergies play a large part. I stay away from prepared food and try to eat as little additives as possible. My doctor cannot believe how flexible I am or how much better I look. My skin has gone from a pale white/grey color to a very rosy color. I hope this information helps. I know that there must be other things out there that would me also. I believe it was the fear of what the "treatment" would do to me that motivated me to do this. I guess use it or lose it really means something. Andrea Kwiatkowski
