Back from RD appt.
Question:
Well, I’m back from the RD. We had a long discussion about everything. He says the muscle spasms are indeed from the FMS. He didn’t make any changes to my meds and when I pointed out my curvaseous fingers and told him I was NOT going to get in the same condition as my grandmother, he assured me that he would get more aggressive before that could happen. Talked to him about my TMJ. The dentist says I need to decide whether I am going to continue with the splint, go for a smaller version or go for braces (yea right I want braces at my age). I was concerned that if I spend alot of money to change the bite that arthur would change the joint and mess things up again. So the RD insisted that I see a specialist who is experienced in the TMJ/arthritis combination. The kicker is he wants me to take up yoga to get my muscles (esp. in the calves) stretched and loosened up. Now, ofcourse I got on him for forcing me to go to Borders book store (a real weakness I have). I got a yoga video and looked at some yoga books and just lost it in the store. There has never been a time that I could put my body in those positions and he wants me to do it now. It’s going to be really interesting and quite comical. Picture me in my mouth splint, my wrist splint and rice socks with my leg up over my ear. If I make it I’ll send Krissy the pics for her web page. If you don’t hear from me for a couple of days, send help, I’m prob. stuck in some yoga position. Sarah L

I’ve heard good things about Pilates too. I learned a little about it when I was a teenager studying dance. Some health clubs offer a full Pilates workout facility with all the apparatus. Pilates stresses stretching and improving range of motion, just like a dancer does in preparation for dancing. Nobody gets bulked up doing Pilates, and that’s probably a good thing for folks with joint disease. Regards, Christine

Dear Sarah, as amusing as the picture might be, <g you might want to work "up" to that level. I understand that there are actually video-s out there specifically for arthritics. I saw the woman that used to play Julia on "Designing Women" being interviewed recently regarding her video. She claimed to have RA…but, she was still wearing spike heels <g. Still, maybe she’s got special designed spike heels? ( Anybody see those in an othotics catalog…LOL.) Anyhow, she suggested that classic yoga could be adapted for such as us. Another option might be a tai chi course. It would offer stretching and such. The arthritis society used to offer a video called "the rom dance" that was an adaption of tai chi just for arthritics. You might check their website. The stretching does actually help with morning stiffness and some ROM. Hope you can find something that works for you. Hi Jeannette, I am concerned about you. I read your posts and you have a lot of information for a lot of people. The concern being that you are on these antidepressants. I have heard that prozac can cause rapid heart beat which in turn makes you feel like you are having a panic attack. Then increasing the dose makes it only worse. Have you ever considered a counselor. It is nothing to be ashamed about. We all have problems. I know I was very uneasy about seeing one, even wore my nurses uniform for visits cause I did not want anyone to know I was there for myself. THat comes from the old ways of thinking you are nuts if you go to one. LOL Seriously they help you do wonders with time and patience. It is a learning process and does not disappear the attacks, over night. But you realize that the panic will not kill you and you manage them. Please check out the prozac because my daughter is a counselor and has seen this first hand. The rapid heart beat is a side effect. Need info I can try to help you if you would like. — JANERS

Hi Jeannette, I was wondering how your rd appoint. went… I am glad you have a good doctor. I was lucky to have found a good one too. She is very careing and understanding. I think she is going to do everything she possilbly can to help me. That is her personality and she hates to see me in pain. She said I was too young to be laying on the couch not being able to move and enjoy my kids. I hope your increase in meds will help you. I just started taking Azulfidine 500 mg 2 x a day for a week then increase to 4 times a day… My predisone was lowered to 5 mg twice a day and she switched my indocin to indocin SR 75… i am also taking Ultram for pain up to 3 times a day if I need to but I am trying to only take it twice… Well you hang in there and keep us posted on how well your doing … Katrina

Hi Dawn: I am on 60 mg. Prozac. My dr. really does not want to take me off Prozac because it is one of his favorites for treatment. I think I need to distract myself more and the anxiety will lessen. Today I am doing pretty good. One hour at a time you know. Jeannette – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear Jeanette, I, too, am at 12.5 MTX and haven taken Prozac forever. WHat dosage of Prozac are you on? Zoloft did nothing for me, it is like the baby of antidepressants with Prozac being the granddaddy. I tried Zoloft a few years ago because the Prozac seemed to be not as eeffective as it once was. At the time I was grieving over the loss of a grandson and did have panic attacks. To make a long story short I had to go back to Prozac. This maybe more info than you wanted but maybe there is another way to go, in the exploration of trying to rid yourself of the panic attacks. Dawn0 Hello friends: I was having another anxiety/panic attack this a.m. thinking about going to my RD who really is the nicest man in the world. He was so wonderful. First of all, he is increasing my MTX to 12.5 mg. and beginning another know!!! Regarding the anxiety/panic/depression, he wants me to continue for one more week taking the Prozac and klonopin six/day 2 at a time and 2 at bedtime. He said if this stuff does not subside in a week, he will switch me to Zoloft or something else. He feels it is a brain chemical imbalance that is triggering this stuff and wants to get it balanced again since I am so prown to depression anyway. I have been on Prozac forever. Anyway, I cried most of the morning before my appt. and then again tonight but somehow it seems to release the anxiety I am feeling. I really don’t know how I am feeling except real tired right now. He spent alot of time with me and tried to cheer me up with positive feedback. I wish you could all have him for your RD. I will talk to you all tomorrow. Blessings to everybody. Hi Jeanette, My doc put me on zoloft which turned me into a zombie (absolutely did not care about anything). He said there are tons of anti-depressants out there and we’ll just keep trying until we get it right. I take effexor now and feel much more like myself. If you are depressed keep trying new meds. Something will work for you. Marg Hello friends: He feels it is a brain chemical imbalance that is triggering this stuff and wants to get it balanced again since I am so prown to depression anyway. My sister was dx’d with clinical depression a 1.5 years ago. She finally had herself hospitalized for a couple weeks, after she started becoming suicidal. Her depression was so bad she started having visual changes, everything started appearing darker. She has been treated by a Psychiatrist to get her chemical imbalance corrected. They finally came up with the right mix of medication and she is a totally different person… she is back enjoying life and having fun. I admire her courage for taking dramatic action. Take care and I hope you are on an upward path. — MZ

HI Jeannette. I am glad that your RD visit went well. It is good to have someone believe and care. But I have to wonder if he is trying to take too much on himself. While I am sure that he sees depression frequently, and probably anxiety and panic disorders (which are separate but related disorders), he really isn’t trained to deal with them. What you have been describing the last few weeks sure seems to me to be more than run-of-the-mill depression. I wonder if you don’t need a referral to a psychiatrist. I know that I didn’t start getting a handle on my depression until I took that step. Just a thought.
