Want to start, but don't know where to begin
Question:
Check-out my teacher’s web site, http://www.evogel.net/ or call 858-573-8646. How about audio tapes and CDs? You don’t have to look-up from them to watch the video. My teacher has a two tape set called Yoga for Life that is pretty illustrative just in the voiced instructions. He also has a correspondence program which is a recording of our weekly classes and is supplemented by a buddy support system (phone contact during the week). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi there, I’m new to the NG and also to Yoga. I’ve heard so many good things about it I thought I try it out to see if it could help me. I’ve bought a video so far but I am also interested in books which can help, can anybody suggest any good books for beginners? Thanks in advance Chats

I became Vegan (literally overnight), and felt the natural progression was to take Yoga. My first class(es) were with a woman in her mid-70’s, and she so inspired me. Left her to take Bikram, Ashtanga, and just noodled with other instructors for variety. I came full swing and am now filling-in for her classes while she’s on vacation (this is 10 years later – in her mid-80’s she’s still more flexible than most people 1/2 her age!). When I found classes to be too time-consuming, I bought videos and books. Don’t like the videos (timing, having to keep looking up, no supervision), but the books have helped me to better understand postures. Of the 3 (classes, videos, books), I will always choose classes. It is stimulating to be in a room of other folks doing the same, and there is guidance, plus it gives me more discipline to hold longer. FIDYL S. Fla. Live Simply So That Others May Simply Live

Yeah, Ali McGraw’s "Yoga, Mind and Body". That is the best yoga tape I have ever come across so far. I sincerely hope to have part2, part3 coming. Mind and Body". The yoga master is Erich Schiffman.

This is how I begin pratising yoga. I am interested in yoga since I was young. So I learnt some basic on my own from magazines, newspapers, etc. All these help. I went for a yoga class when I was 26. From there on, my progress was superb. Within a year, I can do many advcanced poses. I am a father of 2 small children, so don’t have a lot of time to myself. I don’t know if classes, books, or video is the way to go. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Congratulations on your decision to begin practicing yoga for fitness & stress reduction. I agree that the yoga zone videos for beginners are very good; however, if you can find a group class or workshop on hatha yoga for beginners, it is very beneficial to have an experienced teacher, assist you in the proper form of the postures. The teacher will be able to give you immediate feed-back & to assist you in your form. Once you learn the basics with a teacher, videos are fun & pratical! PS, Your children may like yoga too! Yoga kids is a fun video for them. Blessings, sukhava bodhe

Get a beginner video that shows you how to do the sun salutes. Many have them and you can probably find an illustrated guide to the sunsalutes online if you use your favortie search engine.
Sorry to disagree, but for true beginners I feel this is a bad place to start. I’ve been practicing for a few months now, and it is only now that I feel that I’m *approaching* the point where I can start seriously using the two videos I have that are focused on teaching the Sun Salutation, without danger of injury. If you’re truly a beginner, and are starting from a point of significant lack of body strength and body tone, then you really need a practice that focuses on building strength gradually up to the point where you can seriously start thinking about things like flowing from one pose to another, as is the case in the Sun Salutation. — bicker
