help me continue yoga
Question:
hello, my name is lauren and i have been studying and practicing hatha yoga on and off for about two years. i have gone about this by participating in a group of people led by an instructor which i found to be helpful in the beginning…… now however, i would really prefer to continue on my own. i was wondering if anyone could recommend either a good book or video that would help me pursue hatha yoga further, but independently. thank you. lauren

<A HREF="http://www.yogajournal.com/toc/tocframe.html"toc</A Lauren, There are so many good resources, it’s hard to single one out to reccomend. Check this link, the Book & Tape Source will have descriptions of video and audio tapes. If you can rent or borrow from the library first that would be helpful. Enjoy your practice, peace, sandra

Hello, I recommend America’s Yoga Association Beginneers Manual. Peace, Mike
Response:
Lauren! Kudos for continuing and getting serious about your yoga. A teacher can take you far, farther than you imagine and can lend support and guidance at important crucial times. I, personally, think that videos are NOT the way to go when developing a home practice. Think for a moment about how many asanas you know. 10? 20? 50? Now what if you just lit some incense, a candle and put on some soothing music and did those asanas? No particular order, just did whatever "felt right"? This inner guidance and tapping into it, is what I believe the essense of yoga is all about. As folks on this group will attest, I have my favorites, as do we all – I heartly and without reservation recommend Erich Schiffmann’s "Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness". A beautiful book with superb photos and DETAILED instructions on each asana in the book. A vast majority of the book is exerpted at Erich’s website, http://www.movingintostillness.com. Erich was the yoga master who taught on Ali McGraw’s "Yoga, Mind and Body" video. I encourage you to explore this option before investing tons of money on videos that may collect dust, rather than a book that can be a source for a lifetime. – Bill — William Mize St Petersburg, Florida http://home.att.net/~williammize
