Famous People who do Yoga

Question:

Are there any celebrities who do?

Liv Ullman (norvegian actress that worked a lot with Ingmar Bergmann [director]) and Yehudi Menuhin are practicing (Kundalini) Yoga. Sting (musician) is practicing Yoga too. And Bill Clinton got an advice from my Yoga master for an ayurvedic recipie against his fading voice – that he was suffering from right before the hot phase of his 1. presidential election. He was able again to speak after that treatment and as we all know, he win the election.   ;-) Sat Nam – Hari Har Singh

Hi there, Are there any celebrities who do? Lots.  When I was a chef at Kripalu, Woody Harrelson ("Woody" from Cheers, starred in Natural Born Killers, White Men Can’t Jump, and a whole bunch of other movies) came as a guest.  I daresay that he was so impressed with the spirit of the community at the time that for the better part of the week, he came back to the kitchen a few hours each day and plugged in with the cooking.  Nice guy- and we were short-staffed on one or two of those days, so his help was really appreciated.

If you’re interested: there’s an article about Woody Harrelson in the latest issue (February 1998) of Yoga Journal. Also there was an article about David Duchovny (Mulder in X-Files) a couple of issues ago.                         Kaj S. Bikram Choudhury has been calling himself ‘Yogi To The Stars’ for many years. His students include: Raquel Welch (who did a video and book of it), Juliet Prowse, Herbie Hancock, Jeff Bridges, Herb Alpert, Ruth Buzzi, Paula Prentiss, Shirley MacLane and Tom Smothers. Just to name a few.  He was also brought to the United States to teach healing yoga postures to Richard Nixon while he was President, (at least he says he was). My teacher said that last time she was in LA and did a class that Demi Moore was also there. Elladan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – And let’s not forget Sting, Katherine Hepburn and LeVar Burton. Yes. Offhand I can think of Woody Harilson, Kareem Abdoul Jabar, Ali Magraw.

One of the most exemplary people who practice yoga is the musician Sting. He has been interviewed in many yoga and health publ;ications, and all are very worthwhile reading. It is not the fact that he is a celebrity, but that he has the power to reach people and teach them of the things he believes in, and that he has plenty of experience and advice for the practice we are all interested in.

Response:

Dear Ed: Please do not despair, not all of us who practice yoga are so all knowing … or is it self-righteous ;)  It appears that some of the persons on this news group may have missed the philosophy of yoga and kept it to the physical practice only.  I believe that doing asanas without acknowledging the spiritual aspects is simply stretching and calesthenics but not truly the practice of yoga.  there is nothing wrong with that, it just is not the way of a sadhika.

I think you’re right, Gregg. Thanks. Ed.

As for celebs who practice yoga, I only know about a few such as Annie Lennox, formerly of the Pretenders, the taller-than-tall Mr. Chamberlain, formerly of the NBA, Darryl Hanna, actress.  I you want to have more names both the New Age Journal and the Yoga Journal have had articles about some of the well know people who practice yoga. Om shanti.  Hugs, Rose – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – i don’t need to know what celebs do in order to convince my friends and loved ones what i am doing is respected by others. lucky for me the people who know me respect my position and hear me out on my decisions rather than needing to site "famous people" who partake in similar things i do. it is self assurance and independence, being true to myself and ignoring the trivialities of life. i didn’t mean disrespect in my original email. nothing is the matter with curiosity. however, i find talking with REAL people about real things rather than reading "people" magazine and keeping up with which celebs are doing what, or not, much more worthwhile of my time. to each is own, which is what makes the world go around…so long alt.yoga newsgroup!!! What the hell is the matter with you people? I was just asking a simple question. I wasn’t asking it because I think celebrities are better or that one should try to emulate them. It was just curiosity. This reply and the one from that prick Karl lead me to think that you should go out of the house more often. Ed

Response:

What is a celebrity/ who cares? What does this have to do with yoga? Karl, You did sound a bit like a bitter herb.  I think the original question was a sincere one, and there seem to have been a number of good responses.

More like a bitter ‘Erb. And I still think he’s a prat.

What is a celebrity/ who cares? What does this have to do with yoga? Are there any people with shoes size of 9 and a half who do?

What a prat. There wasn’t any deep hidden meaning behind the question, but you had to hallucinate one, didn’t you Karl?

Response:

i agree…who cares which celebs "do yoga". isn’t yoga supposed to be about finding the inner self, being true to yourself, unboggling the mind and finding the third eye? getting caught up in the superficialities of who else is doing it seems to me to defeat the whole purpose of the experience!

Obviously the person who asked the question cares or is at least curious. I can see a very valid reason for wanting to know which  famous people practice yoga.  It is often helpful when explaining to friends and loved ones about what you do.  For some reason it helps those who care about you to be assured that yoga is practiced by well known and respected people.   Om Guru Om – Phillip

And Yoga is about to relax too. Who says that we are caught in this question – maybe your mind is more rotating around this question then mine? Relax & enjoy your Life. :-) Sat Nam – Hari Har Singh

Also, glance through "Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class."  Bikram’s Beverly Hills studio has made him the "Yoga Teacher to the Stars," and he has photographs of his famous students  demonstrating asanas: Tommy Smothers, Shirley MacLane, Herbie Hancock, and a bunch of others.  In conversation, he also described how he worked with Emporer Hirohito, gave a massage to Richard Nixon’s phlebitis-pained legs so he could continue some crucial diplomatic talks (says that’s how he got his Green Card) and turned down an offer to be Elvis’ private trainer ("I tell him:’You come down to the studio and sweat with the rest of us.’ But he not do it.") & used Yoga to rehabilitate Kareem Abdul-Jamar’s shattered knee, which was supposedly going to keep him from ever playing basketball again.                                 Jai Bhagwan,                                 Kavindra
