Totally Tired
Question:
It seems like I’m always tired and fatigued. I really have to work hard at staying motivated. I force myself to do everything. I wake up and drink a cup of coffee, trying to get going. I can’t drink more than 2 cups of 1/2 strength coffee or I’ll end up with heart palpitations. If I drink to much coffee, I’ll defeat my purpose because it causes me to feel like a zoned-out-hyped-up moron. Then I’ll have to sit around trying to wait for this densed-out feeling to pass. If I don’t drink coffee, I’m still at point one, too tired to lift my head off the pillow. I probably need to start an exercise program. As I have said before, I weigh as much as I did when I was pregnant with my twins in the 9th month (They weighed a little over 12 lbs together.) or as much as my last daughter (Who weighed 10 lbs 6 ozs.). Needless to say, my lack of energy is not helping me get motivated to exercise. I have never gotten back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Like I have said many times, I’m a tired mother. What is helping increase your drive to get up and go? Or not? Maybe, I should give up the caffeine, but then what?? Mel To email me remove "nocrap" from my email address.

Hi, Mel. I sometimes feel really zonked during the day. It was bad this summer, then my doc adjusted my meds (added wellbutrin), and things have been better for me since then. I wouldn’t give up the cup of coffee if it helps you, but I DEFINITELY recommend that you exercise daily. I work out everyday. It helps me to feel less depressed, less anxious, and it gets my heart pumping so that I’m more awake. You don’t have to do some god-awful killer exercise. Just go for a morning walk- even if it’s early, you’ll feel better the rest of the day. If you don’t want to or can’t get outside, walk around in the house. My 82 year old grandfather walks 40 minutes everyday- when it’s too cold, hot, or rainy, he just does it inside. What a guy! Anyway- I think that exercise will make you feel good about yourself, make you healthier (mentally and physically), and will perk you up a little more for the rest of your day. IMO, of course! jb

Hi Mel, I have to force myself to do everything also, only way to do it as activity is about the best for anyone, IMHO. Go to your library and get a book on ’stretching exercises’, they are easy to do and can be done on the bed and they do relax you, and you also kill some time doing them. Just be careful and start off slowly and do the easy ones from the start. I have been on Zoloft for about 6 weeks now and one of the common side effects of an anti-depressent is anxiety so I gave up on coffee about 3 weeks ago and I think it has lowered my anxiety somewhat. I did not need anymore anxiety what with the normal anxiety and the medication anxiety so I just stopped the coffee. Dear Mel, I would suggest trying yoga. I love it. It’s not strenuous and you feel incredibly invigorated afterward. It doesn’t cause anxiety like my stepper or aerobics. I first tried books but found to get the safest and proper pose instruction, pick up a video. I started with one by Lilia? Sorry, I can’t be more specific. The video by Kathy Smith called New Yoga is good. She does the pose at the advanced level and their are also examples of what to do if you are a beginner. Honestly, I’m still doing the beginner poses. They are just as good as the advanced ones. I also can not give up my one cup of coffee a day. I tend to make it very, very strong so my husband insists I’m actually drinking two cups a day. I like it black and hot. I know I would probably have less anxiety without it but I know some people who drink pots a day so I figure one or two cups is not the root of my anxiety problem. Give them kids of yours a hug for me and give yourself the biggest one, you need it, you sound pooped my friend!! Tell your husband you need a hug and that I said so!!! <vbg Love, Annette

I agree with Gene and Annette on the stretching/yoga exercise. It’s very low-impact and doesn’t have to involve tying yourself into a pretzel (unless you’re into that sort of thing ; ) hehehe – sounds like it could have its merits! lol I went through a terrible bout of fatigue earlier this year. I was positively narcoleptic half the time. I don’t drink coffee – I’m hooked on diet sodas again – echh – so coffee just won’t quench my thirst. I was WAY too tired to exercise, so what Idid was change what I ate. I started eating a lot of brown rice, yogurt, pasta, fruit – and taking a vitamin supplement, and after a while of this it really helped me. I’m a strict vegetarian, so you could also throw in lean bits of chicken or something to make it more of a meal for you. After eating like this for a while and decreasing my weight, I felt well enough to start walking. : ) Good luck Mel, and just do what you can! That’s all anyone can ask, and demanding more of yourself will only make you feel bad – and there’s no need for that! Love, Parker

Mel, I have to tell you that I’ve only been drinking water for the past 2 months and just eating normal foods… Junk food too, but not as often…But even those diet soda’s like parker was saying , and any other crappy soda or stuff like that is terrible for your body… For like the last 8 years I have always felt like all I want to do is sleep, and getting up and doing things seemed to be so hard…. Water flushes everything out… And you need a good month or so of JUST water to see these results…I can go with just 5 hours of sleep a night now and feel good in the morning… Usually I would always have these highs and lows all day…Probably because all that sugar, sweetener crap that has been in my body for so long… But just drinking water and decent foods has helped me a ton….. Also , stay away from sugar….. I tested myself yesterday…. I ate a nice big dinner and then couldnt resist these chocolate chip cookies …After I ate them , I felt crappy and tired…… Also , I’m taking vitamin b12 , vitamin C , and folic acid…. I’m sure they also have a good effect on fatigue…..try it, I know its hard but it is the only thing that has ever worked for me….

Mel, I am also very tired all the time, sometimes it even keeps me home from work. I was home yesterday on a vacation day and didn’t get up until 1:30 PM and that was because I had to! I could’ve slept all day with no problem. At work, I am always having to fight the incredible urge to go out to my car and take a nap. I exercise moderately every day, and take vitamin supplements, but it hasn’t helped me much. I’m thinking mine is the depression that accompanies my PD. I’ve never been through so much or been as depressed as I am at this time in my life. I separated from my husband a little over a year ago, and it has been a HARD one, and I just recently (within the last 3 months) changed meds from Prozac to Paxil (although the fatigue began long before that). I know I haven’t helped, I just wanted you know that you’re not alone. Michelle
