yoga in India
Question:
Yes, what Brent wrote about the Iyengar Institute in Pune is correct. I spent 6 weeks at the Institute in 1995. The waiting list for Westerners is 1-2 years, depending on what time of year you will be in India. Obviously, the cool season (November to January) has the longest waiting time. You you also need to send a deposit and a history of your Iyengar-style yoga training and practice. The classes are vigorous, the teaching style traditional and hierarchial–something we Americans can find difficult. But the reward can be equal to the effort! The plus is that many Westerners are at the Institute, and if it is your first visit to India, you have plenty of comraderie and support. Particularly if you are female. I understand that one of the Yoga Journal editors is writing a book about different ashrams and yoga centers in India. I’m not sure when it is due to be published, but it will be a valuable resource for those looking to travel to India for the yoga experience. Namaste’ Sherilyn

Check out the Worldwide Sivananda Yoga Organization web page at: www.sivananda.org They have several Ashrams throughout India, I think most of them in the South. If you need more detail or help, feel free to mail me directly. Rania – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi! I’m dreaming about spending some time in India and possibly doing a yoga retreat while there. I’m not a beginner at yoga, but I’m not that advanced either, so I imagine an Iyengar course would be out of my league. Anyone here done something like this? Been to Iyengar’s school in India? I’d be happy for any info! Namaste, –Kara

I haven’t been, but my teacher in Denver has been to Mr. Iyengar’s Ramamani Institute in Pune twice. My understanding is that foreigners go there to attend "public classes" for three or four weeks, and you have to sign up perhaps a year or more in advance (quite a waiting list). Many of the classes are taught by Mr. Iyengar’s daughter, Geeta, and son, Prashant. I think there are at least two classes a day. The classes sound intensive. I understand the pollution in Pune is terrible, that most people who go to India get sick, and that you take your life in your hands crossing the street. You might try checking out the IYNAUS web site, at: http://www.iyoga.com/IYNAUS/. They have a toll free # that you could perhaps call to get some info if you’re interested in going to Pune (I would probably recommend some other choice if you have not studied Iyengar yoga). Sorry I’ve no first hand information (maybe someday)! Brent Johnson

Bihar Yoga Bharati Ganga Darshan Munger Bihar 811201 INDIA I you write to this adress, you should enclos a international mail reply coupon. The place was earlier named Bihar School of Yoga, and was started by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, a disciple of Sw. Sivananda. They have several courses. and the approach to yoga is a very classical one, you can learn all the cleansing techniques, yogapostures, breathing exercises and different meditations, from simple mantra meditation to advanced tantric meditation (kundalini kriya yoga). I have been there myself, and will go back to stay for a two year course. It is also possible to learn how to use yoga as therapy (drug rehabilitation, stress management etc) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I too, would like to do some time over there and haven’t got a clue as to where to go, stay, study, etc. I want to study yoga, and also I would like to study with a hindu astrologer as well.
