Hi!! New to group.  Was diagnosed in 92 but started having symptons in 89. I have weakness in legs so I use a wheelchair so I can have my hands free to do cooking and laundry.  I am 41, married, have 2 boys ages 11 and 14.  They are very helpful.  I consider myself lucky I haven’t had any pain.  Take prednisone and Amantadine.  Also have developed high blood pressure.  My left side is affected as far as foot drop. Have been to therapy over the years but only found 1 therapist that seem to know about MS, but unfortunately was transfered to another, but she didn’t work out.  Was told to stop and come back if I felt I needed more therapy.  So I thought I would try a video instead. Megan, I personally like anything by Richard Simmons.  Richard has been morbidly obese in his life and recovered thru healthy diet & excersize. Some of the people on his tapes are huge and have difficulty moving. Others are "average American" which means 10-50 lb overweight.  Some appear to be professional dancers.  I started doing these videos years ago before MS and find that I can still get a lot out of them. Depending on the effects of MS on you personally, you might have to modify some movements.  If your balance is good enough to do some light dancing, you can do something with these videos. Sweating to the Oldies is my favorite.  Best done in a very well air conditioned room. Kim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Megan Hopkins wrote:

I’d laugh, but I have the same problem!  Heck!  I’ll laugh, anyway, it’s good for us. LOL LOL LOL! Three days ago a friend gave me a gift of a relaxation tape.  I’ve had major sleeping problems like many of us, but after putting on my WALKMAN ear phones and listening to the tape, I can fall and stay asleep!!!!   The first night it didn’t work too well because I found it incumbent upon myself to actually listen to what it was saying.  The last two nights, I didn’t, and I actually SLEPT!  I also take Skelaxin for my spastic legs at night, but that alone was not allowing me to sleep. You might be amazed at how much more energy you have during the day if you can actually sleep at night! (((((soft, sweet, slumber to you!!!!))))) Jeanie Mac

I’ve done Kathy Smith’s Yoga Basics, and it gives you one hell of a workout! I didn’t even think I was getting that much out of it until the next day, when I found out the hard way that I overdid it! For "passive exercise" you sure get one hell of a workout! I’d reccommend it to anyone, because you’ll be getting good exercise without even feeling it, and she even reccommends a chair for those who have poor balance, so you won’t feel too tired.                                                 Cyberhugs,                                                         Cyd  :) ~~~~~~~~|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~    `~-._|            I love being alive     `   ~ )           and I will be the best woman I possibly can.       –  //            I will take love wherever I find it   ,,.–(_ ("""^==–*    and offer it to everybody who will take it.  ;;( ,___, ,/~;        Seek knowledge from those who are wiser ;’ )/

Hi Kate, I found an exercise video on the web, made by a woman who also has MS. It isn’t yoga, but it is nice easy stretches.  I really love it!  I have had it for almost a month now, and have seen improvements with my attitude and with all over feeling better.  I can even lie on the floor on my stomach and read  books to my kids without my lower back hurting! I haven’t been able to do that for quite a few years!  So, check out http://www.gentlefitness.com/ Have I told ya I really love it? LOL Take care! Sarah

Response:

I have been taking yoga classes for four years. I know I am stronger, and I love  th relaxation. I feel the stretching is great for me. I also have been working  out at a gym for five months now. I am gaining endurance and I feel much more  energetic. Keep up the yoga. Hi – I’m new here.  And I’m not even sure if I know how to send one of these things! I was diagnosed in May, and the MS hasn’t let me forget it’s there, ever since! I tried a Yoga class last week (I’ll try anything to try and ease this) .. and while I expected to feel lke a berk, I actually started to visualise the lesions, and I could imagine making them disappear just by concentrating.  And it did seem to work! Has anyone else found this, or should I just call for the men in white coats now?!!

Response:

Hi! Yoga works for me–it’s very relaxing, and that’s important with this stressful  disease.  I don’t know that you’re making lessions disapear, but if it make  you feel better, why not?   My only problem with yoga now is getting off the floor after I exercise! <g

Hi Andrew & Caron, I, personally, don’t think you’re crazy!  There are some who truly believe in the power of the mind and swear by their success in doing just what you described, visualizing the problem area and then seeing it be cured or, as in your case, disappear.  I don’t know if it really works but if it seems to work for you, then I, for one, say GO FOR IT!! It, certainly, can’t hurt anything and probably is better than some of the medicine that doctor’s prescribe. Silver

Does anyone know of a MS yoga videotape?  I did yoga years ago before the MS diagnosis.  Now I am pretty stuck.  I can’t easily get out to a class anymore.  I can’t even drive myself to the pool.  Maybe a tape would help. After my non-seizure, non-exacerbation, due to brain damage thing I had Tuesday, I am afraid to try to drive.  I can’t walk at all so I feel trapped here in the house. Kate

Hi Kate, This is not stupid at all.  The Yoga For Health Foundation here in UK do a tape for MS I think, but am not sure whether its video or audio.  Their address is Ickwell Bury, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, SG18 9EF, UK .  telephone no. = code for Uk followed by 0767 627271. Hope you will get to feel a bit better very soon.  Lots of warm wishes from me and Jim. Helen :)
