In which order should I practice Asanas, Pranayama & Meditation? It depends on your schedule and your preferences. Although the most logical order is as above, any order is OK. If you practice early morning, we recommend to start with meditation; your mind will be more quiet right after waking up and your body is still too stiff for doing Asanas (postures) right away. Traditionally, the Asanas are practiced before the breathing techniques (Pranayama) but we found that doing Pranayama before Asanas in the Yoga classes in our Ashrams and Centers helps the students be more focused and aware. Remember the most important thing is to actually practice. Don’t just keep sitting in front of your computer. Breathe and stretch once in a while :-) HATHA YOGA TIP –  from book "101 essential Yoga tips" Tip # 19: Single Nostril Breathing The object of practicing Yogic breath discipline, or "Pranayama", is to increase physical and mental health. You can practice the breathing exercises on their own or integrate them into your program of Yoga Asanas. Sit comfortably in a cross-legged position, with your spine and neck straight, but not tense. Hold your head erect and gently close your eyes. Use the fingers of the right hand to close off each nostril in turn. Hold them in a position called "Vishnu Mudra". For "Vishnu Mudra", extend the thumb, ring finger, and little finger of your right hand and fold down your other two fingers into your palm. Rest the left hand on your left knee. Breathe through the left nostril. Close right nostril with thumb, and inhale through left nostril to a count of four. Exhale to a count of eight. Repeat 10 times. Breathe through the right nostril. Close left nostril with the two end fingers, and inhale through right nostril to a count of four. Exhale to a count of eight. Repeat 10 times. VEGETARIAN CUISINE Please note that the ingredients and instructions are given in U.S. measurements Sunflower Seed Salad Dressing. This is the most popular salad dressing in our Ashrams and centers worldwide. Makes 4-5 cups. Ingredients: 1 cup oil; 1/2 cup tamari; 1/2 cup lemon juice; 1 to 2 cups sunflower seeds. Instructions: In a blender, combine all the ingredients and blend until you get a smooth and creamy consistency. If the consistency is too thick, add more water; if too thin, add more sunflower seeds. To this mixture, you can add any herb or spice you prefer. Taste and adjust. SIVANANDA "OM" PAGE The traffic of our web site has been increasing nicely with over 1,000 visitors last week generating over 28,000 hits. We have updated most pages and are working on new pages covering the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta more broadly. UPCOMING EVENTS         – Teachers Training course – Nassau, Bahamas: February 2 – March 2, ‘97         – Advanced Teachers Training course – Nassau, Bahamas: March 9 – April 6, ‘97 NEWS FROM SIVANANDA CENTERS & ASHRAMS AROUND THE WORLD         – All Ashrams & centers There were Holiday (Christmas/Hanukah) celebrations all over the world in the Sivananda locations. Most centers had Christmas Satsangs/parties which were great opportunities for the staff, teachers, students and volunteers to celebrate the holidays in their true spirit and to gather socially. A wonderful thing about the Sivananda organization is that you quickly feel part of it as in a big family. Our Ashrams offered wonderful holiday retreats for those who were able to take time and be completely immersed in the Yogic lifestyle and the joy of the holidays.         – Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas The Yoga retreat was hosting over 200 Yogis and Yoginis who attended the "Unity and Diversity" symposium. Special guests from many traditions – Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Native American – gave fantastic lectures and workshops throughout the 2 weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year. The weather was perfect and the water of course was crystal clear and warm. This has been a tough winter so far in North America and Europe. I was in Nassau a few days ago and am urging you to take a break from the cold and go for a yoga vacation in Nassau.         – London (England) Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Centre is once again extremely busy as many students, both new and old seem to have decided to practice  Yoga as their New Years resolution! To keep up with demand we have a full and varied programme to offer everybody. In addition to the Beginners courses starting each week, daytime and evening, the first  Y2m (Beginner/Intermediate yoga postures combined with meditation) of 1997 starts next Monday 20 January at 7pm. For those wishing to brush up their practice, a Yoga 1- Review and a headstand workshop (every fortnight) commence this Friday 17th. This weekend  Judith Morrison,  author of the newly released "Book of  Ayurveda " is conducting her workshop " Qualities and Lifestyles". Using Ayurveda ,the ancient healing system of India, to define ones likely pattern of health and ill-health by assessing ones body type and diet. Sat & Sun Jan 18-19 , 9am -4pm , from
