Serious rededication

Question:

I’ve hit the wall.   In the past 2 weeks I’ve gained another 5lbs.  Its really time!  I’ve got to do something. As of last August I was 130lbs and holding.  Things were ok and I was happy with my body in most senses. Then the hurricanes hit.  Living in FL, and so close to it all, it hit hard on the heart and I think deperession kicked in.  I had no energy, no will and just didn’t care. Add to that a heavy work load and lots of overtime.   And, add to that – shear laziness and lack of willpower. From August to November I gained at a rate of 1lb per week.  In november I gained control and held steady on the weight thru the holidays.  But I’d gained 15lbs. In January I rededicated to the gym.  I’ve been going 3 times a week and things have been progressing with strength.  I also tried rededicating to food, but that only lasted about 2 weeks and then its all gone to hell. In the last 3 weeks I’ve gained an additional 5lbs. Either I’m hormonally messed up – or I’m in denial. (FFID is probably the issue, and I admit it).   So, as of today: I’m getting up 1/2 hr earlier and hitting the exercise bike.   I’m also going to dedicate to ride for 1/2 hr at night before bed.    For a total of 1hr a day.  My goal is to do this 6 to 7 days a week. I’m returning to low carb/low cal.  Its gonna be hard to kick the chocolate habit, but it must be done. Still plan to hit the gym 3 times a week (minimum) for those workouts.   The hardest part will be controlling the appetite.  But it must be done. I’m currently at 150lbs and this is the highest I ever remember being (asside from post pregnancy).   Thank god for all my previous hard work, as I’m still in size 8 clothes – but they are getting tigher and I’m getting scared. I need help.

I completely sympathize and empathize, JayJay — I am right there with you on the rededication. I am now 21.5 lbs above my goal weight and am unhappy about clothes not fitting. It’s been three years since I’ve used FitDay for tracking, but since I couldn’t get myself back in the groove of keeping a paper food journal, I am enjoying the novelty of FitDay and the slight obsession with playing with all the numbers and reports. It has worked to help keep me on track for the last week — at least according to FitDay, I have taken in less calories than I have burned. So we’ll see what the next few weeks bring. I have set a goal of weighing 150 by June 15. There is no reason in the world that I can’t do it. I have also started a cardio kickboxing class — just to throw something completely different into my exercise routine. Maybe some kind of novelty or shake-it-up thing might work for you too —   with either food, exercise or tracking? Is there anything in particular that’s worked for you before that you haven’t done in a while? Or some new exercise class like Pilates or something to give you something new to focus on? I find it easier to get excited about something new than something that’s grown "old hat." Just throwing out ideas here. I know it must be tough for you to be going through, but if anyone here can take matters in hand and get back to basics and a good healthy food and exercise plan, it is you. And I am here cheering you on. Mary

Jay Jay, I’ve been around here long enough for me to know you have strength of mind, and I have no doubt that you can turn around your current situation. I know what it’s like to gain even faster than you’ve been doing, and to grow out of clothes that I’d been wearing happily.  It’s scary and depressing.  I’m glad married life is making you content, but come on now, you know what you have to do. janice

Hi jay jay, It’s great that married life is good. We all hit the wall, at least 99% and we are experts in carrying on if only we can get going again. It needs a big push to start and stick for the first week or two and I know you will do it. You have been a good mentor with the rest of us and no mincing words. i took a number of measures to get back on track and that’s the best I can do. Increased size of dumbell weights. Started walking. Stopped snacking . Got rid of toxic relationships and try to be straught and upfront about things. At least is I have a fat ass, I’ll have a clear head. maybe DH will join you until you get rolling. — Diva ***** The Best Man For The Job Is A Woman

Hey JayJay– I think we’ve all gone through something similar at some point in our lives. There’s no use beating yourself up for it. You took a first step by making a plan–now all you have to do is stick to it. Is DH and DS joining you in riding or gym? They can help keep you motivated and on track. And you did very well before on the lower carb WOE, so going back to it is a step in the right direction as well. And when you lost/maintained before you had a specific goal–do you have a new goal on which you can set your sights? Swearing off chocolate never worked for me, so I made room for it in my WOE–Hershey’s kisses, sucked slowly, not chewed, work wonders for my sweet tooth. Good luck, JayJay Amy

Go get ‘em JayJay!  Your plan sounds solid and we know you can do it. Work it day by day or even hour by hour if you need to.

If only the motivation of Day 1 would stay for greater than a couple weeks. That always seems to be my biggest trouble – making it past day 5 or 10… Please tell me your MIL won’t be visiting anytime soon?  You may have to ban her ;-)

Oh goodness….  I have until April and then they will be here.  This time bringing friends with them so they won’t be "sleeping" at our house, but will most likely be eating at our house for most meals.   On top of that – I guess about the same time my father and stepmom will be in town (although I haven’t spoken to him in 6months) and my brother and his wife will also be in town.  That’s gonna be a few weeks of hell.  :)

DH goes with me about once a week.  That has its pluses and minuses. Usually I end up cutting my workouts short because he has created some diversion that has us waylayed for time or something.  In short – I’d rather go alone, I get a better workout.  :)

DH and I have had the same issues.  What we’ve done to deal with it is that I go to the gym earlier (right from work) and he meets me there.  I realize that won’t work for most people but it’s not a problem for us to use two cars. Jenn

I totally feel for you.  I know others on the Gulf coast who are having hurricane related stress.  The combo of stress, fatigue, and hormones is just a killer.  I think you just get to a point where you realize it’s not going to subside so then it’s time to deal with the crappy hand you’re being dealt right now. Your plan sounds like a good one though. The fact that you’ve made a plan is a positive step. Jenn

right now I need to illiminate chocolate.  I can’t stop at just one.  And I do eat it mindlessly at times.  So, if I can’t handle it, I need to try to go without it for a period of time.   Not forever.  But for now.  :) Good luck, JayJay

Thanks for the encouragement Janice.   I can say, I don’t think its married life that has made me "content" that caused the weight gain.   I can say it was the overwhelming stress of the hurricanes and the guilt that came with it, as well as the stress from the work load.  Then being tired and lack of energy from the 1. depression over the stress and 2.  the workload.   I’d get home from work and just want to go to sleep and not deal with life. Then there are these abnormal hormonal issues I’ve been having that I need to get to the doctor about. Anyhow – that is over and it is time to regain control over eating habits. The exercise isn’t so much the issue as the eating. One day down – many more to go.

I can second the idea of different exercises.  During the winter I get bored just lifting weights and using the treadmill.  I’ve been dusting off the exercise videos and trying different exercises to give myself some variety.  I’ve done Pilates, yoga, exercises on the ball and bosu ball.  If I could locate my step I might even try some of the old step aerobics videos.  I even dragged out the manual for the treadmill and punched in some new walk/run programs to follow. Hopefully the people who rushed to the gym at the new year will soon thin out and I can start going there again.  I keep checking out their parking lot on my way home and it’s still fairly crowded.   Beverly

You’ve done it before and I’m sure you’ll do it again.  BTDT – it’s tough getting back on track.  Just keep at it and don’t let a bad day get you down.  I started a new exercise program a couple weeks ago and immediately gained a couple pounds:(  That resulted in a little over eating but I’ve been able to take control again this week. Gawd…..why are we rewarded with a weight gain when we increase the exercise! Glad to see you posting again. Beverly

Bought a notebook tonight – for 4 different kinds of trackign 1.  Weekly measurments of key body parts and weekly weight/BF average 2.  Daily weight/BF for averages 3.  Exercise 4.  Food

That sounds great and might be just what you need — as they say, if you don’t measure it you can’t improve it. I’m not religous enough for fitday and to spend the time.

I’m fascinated by how much the program has improved in the past three years — and I ended up downloading the PC version so that I don’t have to do it online. Not to mention that calorie counting is a bit difficult with the amount I eat out.

I’m finding this a little troublesome too – so I’m just trying to describe the food accurately and it seems to figure out numbers that make sense. But my lunch goals if I do go out/eat in is for just a house salad and avoid bluecheese dressing.

Sounds good. I like salads out too. The exercise thing – I’m trying to do the 2, 30min sessions on the bike. I do enjoy my current gym schedule and haven’t had a problem with that. That was one positive change I made in January that I’ve kept up with for about amonth now.

That’s great and is a success you can build on — your "foundation." I know it must be tough for you to be going through, but if anyone here can take matters in hand and get back to basics and a good healthy food and exercise plan, it is you. Thank you, Jay Jay — I appreciate that. I know you can do this and look forward to reporting our progress together. I can already feel some results from this week’s efforts–especially a mental/emotional change which is the most important to me. But it takes the physical action first, and then the motivation comes. Not always easy to remember and something that newbies seem to struggle with — but it’s true that feeling follows action. Mary

I’ve been wanting to try Pilates! I need to look at the library for the videos. Glad you are finding some things to mix it up till the gym gets back to normal! That’s what I love about going to my current gym — it never matters what time of year, etc. because I have my own appointment and if anyone else is working out at the same time, it’s just one other person. No waiting, no thinking, no slacking off — just the kind of place I needed, LOL. Mary

JayJay, what is happening is simply a test of just how much you want to be slim. You have proven in the past that you can lose weight, the question is, do you want it badly enough this time.

I gained weight (in the form of muscle mass) when I did boot camp last time.  But the detriment was also to my health in the lack of rest I got. I nearly killed myself by nearly falling asleep at the wheel of the car because of exhaustion back then.  Yes, getting slim and wanting it badly enough is one thing – but to the detriment of your health is another.

I started going back again in early January and found it wasn’t that bad. Then again, I go at the 7 – 8pm hour and usually the gyms cleared out by then.  And, last summer a new fandangled gym opened taking away many members to our little ‘ol Y.   There are some days its fairly busy but if you are willing to work around different machines you don’t end up waiting.

You’ve just strengthened my resolve to go this afternoon even though it will throw his plans into disarray.  He said he’d go this evening but I can’t make this evening as I have to work. I have just consulted the class schedule and while there is no particular class I want to do this evening (this morning there was one at the time we agreed to go) there is a water aerobics class a bit later.  Perhaps I can swim first and then do the water aerobics class. JayJay, what are you eating that is causing so much weight gain? Is your issue portion control, too much snacking, or WHAT you choose (i.e. the fried vs. the broiled). Have you gone to the store and filled the house with things you CAN eat, and gotten rid of whatever temptations you face? When you open the fridge, is it stuffed with veggies and fruits? For me to be able to control myself, I need a bunch of good choices on hand that I actually enjoy, plus all the sauces, spices, etc. needed to prepare them without a lot of trouble. If I don’t have the salsa and the pickles on hand, I’ll eat the chocolate chip cookies. Mary G.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Rhapsody of the Seas, perchance?  I went on that one last year. They really suck up to the Texans, so be prepared! Yes, Rhapsody of the Seas. who sucks up to the Texans? The ship’s crew? did you enjoy the trip? The cruise was faboo, except for the Texas overkill — Texas flags everywhere, cowboy dress-up night, at least two instances of the dining room staff singing "Deep in the Heart of Texas"… sheesh. Well, I guess they know where their bread is buttered.  Or chilied. The beauty of a cruise is that it’s so simple to keep low carbing (as long as you can avoid the desserts).  My advice is to eat every meal in the dining room — AVOID THE BUFFET.  The food isn’t nearly as good in the buffet, and in the dining room you can have anything you want. Have a great time, and be sure to report back.

I know some of the RCCL cruises leave out of TX – which could be why it was TX themed.  I left out of Miami on Explorer of the Seas and they didn’t suck up to Texans on our cruise – same cruise line as Rhapsody of the Seas.  We went to the buffets all day and in the formal dining at night.  On the buffets – I could choose whatever I wanted – I had only been LC’ing a short time when I went – but I had no real desire for starches.  I did eat fresh pineapple every day.  I stuck with non deep-fried meats, salads, vegetables, diet soda and water.  I came home from the cruise and didn’t gain any weight while out (7 nights).  We did a lot of walking while on the cruise.  I’m ready to go again. ok sorry for the bump, but this has to be addressed….  the texas "overkill" you mention isnt overkill.  its just how we are here.  we are proud to be texan, we love texas, we’ve killed presidents, hoodlums, and we still have laws on the books that says you can be hung in town square!  who can beat that?  anyway, its not just on the cruise youll find that sort of thing.  just about every town in texas will show you the same kind of pride.  while i might not understand it not being from texas, ive lived here long enough to sort of enjoy it.

Who’s post were you refferring to?  I am also from TX which is why I responded – I didn’t mention the overkill – only respond based on another cruise from the same cruise line.  I love TX and San Antonio. Diane

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The cruise was faboo, except for the Texas overkill — Texas flags everywhere, cowboy dress-up night, at least two instances of the dining room staff singing "Deep in the Heart of Texas"… sheesh. Well, I guess they know where their bread is buttered.  Or chilied. I know some of the RCCL cruises leave out of TX – which could be why it was TX themed.  I left out of Miami on Explorer of the Seas and they didn’t suck up to Texans on our cruise – same cruise line as Rhapsody of the Seas. Yes, this cruise leaves from Galveston — incidentally, they were remodeling the port last year and it looked like a bomb had hit it.  I hope it’s improved! We went to the buffets all day and in the formal dining at night.  On the buffets – I could choose whatever I wanted. I was speaking specifically of the buffet on Rhapsody of the Seas — unless they’ve since  paid attention to my comment card, it’s TERRIBLE.  I’d liken it to cafeteria food.  However, the dining room food was terrific, and I really enjoyed the personal attention.

We were on Explorer of the seas and the buffets were pretty good.  We loved our nitely dinners in the dining room with the same 3 wait staff every night.  Our assitant waiter went out with us twice to the ports.  Good looking young man from India.  Used to be a dancer and had the body for it. I am looking forward to planning another cruise. Diane – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – —- Face your fears. Live your dreams.

Yes, Rhapsody of the Seas. who sucks up to the Texans? The ship’s crew? did you enjoy the trip? Lori

Response:

They may not be sucking up to the Texans.  I have been on several cruises in the past few years, and we always went at the same general time of the year.  And every cruise had an Irish theme, the-irish-dancing, boiled dinner night (etc..)  Finally I asked the cruise people what was going on… It seems that cruises, at least NCL, has themed cruises that follow year to year.  This year we are going in May instead of Sept.  Hopefully there will be no irish-dancing night.  (Not that we didnt enjoy it, but a change would be nice). All that said, you should ask your travel agent or the cruise line directly about any themes or things of that nature… or maybe not, I could be completely off the mark :-) either way, enjoy!! cruising is great.. -Andrea – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Rhapsody of the Seas, perchance?  I went on that one last year. I’d like to know if the Wal-Mart’s, TJ Max and stores in general, sell bathing suits in Florida all year round.  I’ll be going down in April and would rather take the time and try on a new suit. It probably will remind me to not over eat while I’m there also!

Hi Does anyone know where or how one can buy a swimdress, similar to a swimsuit that extends almost kneelength? One swims in it and can easily walk around in beach areas and hotel lobbys-not worrying about a cover-up. They are not the height of fashion this year. Three years ago I purchased a few in a maternity shop, Judy

I’ve never once found a Land’s End swimsuit in my cup size.  They have plus sizes, but they do not have busty sizes.  After two people suggested that… I went looking on the internet to see if I was mistaken… nope. http://www.landsend.com/cd/popup/0,,copyName=pop_swim_0704_glossary.html Their website link above lists their different swimsuit sizes, and the highest cup size they go to is a D.  I only wish I was that small.

The Y sounds so great, how you have been so excited and talking about it. I looked into it more. The family price a month is really good, with so many things for all family  members. Seriously thinking on getting a family membership. I am interested too, in the pilates/yoga. I got to start out easy though, with my health issues. So far been doing a exercise bike at home. I feel it, in a good way… In the inner thighs, abdomen.  I do this right now just three days a week.  I got to do it easy, or I will end up in pain. Then be bed bound, taking pain meds, and the whole nine yards. I havn’t worked in quite awhile, because of health problems. I came across a ad in the paper Sunday. A job opening, for receptionist/clerk at a Y that is just 5 minutes from home. Its part time, and what I have been looking for. Put a application in yesterday, crossing my fingers I may get the position.  :)  ! Keep the great work up, you are doing so great!

Thanks to both of you for the well wishes. I hope too, to get the job. If I don’t going to still go a looking and find one. I cannot stand to sit at home any longer. My energy has increased so much. I am signing up at the Y anyways, regardless if I get that job. Getting a family package, I think it will be a good thing for the boys too. I can go to the Y when they are in school. Or a hour or so after dinner we can all go.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Oh yeah baby!  I woke up after my first full weight lifting work-out at the YMCA with some wonderfully aching muscles.  No aching joints, just muscles. Arms, legs, abs, they’re all letting me know they’re there.  Most importantly to me, I finally feel it in my triceps.  Curves claims that one of their machines does triceps, but I was never able to feel a burn from it, and if the other women in my family are any indication, that’s gonna be a problem spot for me.  Yay!  I’m gonna try a yoga/pilates combo class today.  I was originally going to swim today, but I tried on my swim cap last night and it’s way uncomfortable, so I have one more bit of shopping to do before I can swim.  Man. Me, working out 6 days a week. Who woulda thunk it? Wow, you’re so AMBITIOUS!  AND energetic!  KUDOS to you for jumping in and trying it ALL!  You DO have a bathtub, right?  I LOVE my hot baths, ESPECIALLY if I’m sore from working out.

I dunno if I’m ambitious or energetic at all.  I’m only working out an hour a day, weights 3 days a week, and the other 3 days either swimming, yoga, pilates, or a cardio funk class I haven’t taken yet.  So far I’ve only done the weight training once, and today’s yoga/pilates combo class. I feel sore in a good way, but in the back of my head I keep thinking that exercise should be harder, that it’s supposed to leave me sweaty, exhausted, and out of breath.  Maybe the cardio funk class will do that.  I hope I’m getting what I should be getting out of the weight training.  Like I said, I feel sore, and I’m lifting enough so that I’m really having to push myself at the end of my second set, and the last couple of reps whatever muscle I’m working is actually shaking.  Yet I didn’t feel exhausted afterwards, and I didn’t sweat very much at all.  So far both the weight lifting and the yoga/pilates class are challenging, but not nearly as difficult as I thought they would be. — Michelle Levin http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick I have only 3 flaws.  My first flaw is thinking that I only have 3 flaws.

Also, you can have cheese but it must be reduced fat.  For Bacon, either Turkey Bacon or Canadian Bacon.   Wherever possible, substituting a low fat alternative that doesn’t add sugars or carbs.  This isn’t possible in a lot of foods so you eat the regular stuff.  I.E.  mayo, salad dressings etc My typical day diet is Miniature Spinach Quiches made with Egg Beaters (can make in advance and freeze)  Eggs are ok too. Farmers Cheese and Summer Sausage (small amount) for a snack  I plan on changing this soon to get away from the nitrates in the summer sausage but need to explore the grocery store. Lunch  Lean Meat and Vegetable Snack-Protein Bar.  Today I had one of those sugar free chocolate bars being talked about in another thread and didn’t make the correlation of why I ran to the bathroom until now. Dinner  Lean Meat, Vegeetable and Salad Dessert-Flavored Ricotta (excellent) or sugar free jello with fat free coolwhip. seems to work for me.  I can’t pass up vegetable in summer even if only for 2 weeks.  I’ve lost 2.5 pounds the first 2 days.  I also do pilates/yoga 3 days a week. both prevention magazine and msnbc have informative articles on their websites. sue k

CONNECTICUT

Question:

Yep, the Berkshire’s are only hills in comparison. I lived in Eugene Oregon for about 9 months in 1978-79. It was pretty cool. In the winter you were in a fertile valley that stayed green, although I believe some trees did loose their leaves, the grass stayed green all winter and there was moss hanging off of some of the trees and well as large ferns growing in the forest. But you could look out over the horizon and see the snow capped peaks. When they gave the weather report they would say something like – it is snowing down to the 2000 ft. level. I thought that was strange at first but as you looked across the horizon you could see the snow at the same level no matter where you looked. And then there were the butes. Looked like small bumps from a distance but they could be 1000 or more feel and practically rise up right out of the terrain. It almost seemed like being on the moon because the geology was so varied and so different then it is back east. I only visited Seattle for 2 days but really like it. However, as cool as it all was I was glad to get back to the gentle green rolling hills of New England. For some reason the hardwood forests seem to create a more friendly and appealing environment, at least to me. I know someone who lives in Cambridge (MA) but is from Seattle, and she misses her homeland, so it may have a lot to do with where you grow up. Anyway, hope you enjoy it out there. One year is not enough time to see everything but it’s a good start. Take Care, Jeff 2

Exercise points

Question:

Do you have any sites that will give me points for such activities as Pilates, Yoga, weight lifting and bike riding? Thanks

Response:

Do you have any sites that will give me points for such activities as Pilates, Yoga, weight lifting and bike riding? Thanks

I grabbed the following formula for calculating excersize points from somewhere: p = (w/50) * (e/85) * m where:  p = points  w = Weight (in pounds)  e = Exercise level      (1   = Light excersize       1.5 = Moderate, ie, just breaking a sweat       3.5 = Heavy)  m = minutes 211/184/170 — Scott Seligman

Response:

Hi Lynn The points values for the activities you mention are as follows: Pilates – 1 bonus point per 15 mins Yoga – 1 bonus point per 15 mins weight training – 1 bonus point per 15 mins cycling gently (2 miles in 30 mins) 1 bonus point per 15 mins cycling strenuously (2 miles + in 15 mins) – 1 1/2 points per 15 mins static cycling – 1 1/2 points per 15 mins (info taken from WW CD-ROM) Carolyn

Yup, the key is to be consistent.  Personally, I think it’s all a marketing ploy anyway, especially for the newbie.  Machine "A" gets you 400 calories, while Machine "B" only gets you 300 calories.  Which machine is that person going to use more often? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – That sounds reasonable, Oscar – thanks for this suggestion. I have noticed that if you use a similar machine at various gyms, the calories burned estimate can vary a great deal. I tend to use the activity points list included with my Weightwatchers CD, and go with that to be consistent. Cheers, Petal Another thing is that the machines tend to overestimate calories expended by about a third.  So, that 400 on the machine can vary by as much as 140 calories (260 calories actually burned).  I think to be safe, if you had to calculate exercise points by numbers on the machine, split it in half and calculate points earned that way. – Osc

no doubt…my treadmill trys to tell me that I’m burning 100 calories for every mile I walk on it.  I walked close to 6 miles yesterday (two workouts) and the total calories burned was over 500 calories.  I find it hard to believe… Sally – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – That sounds reasonable, Oscar – thanks for this suggestion. A few weeks ago, there was a discussion on activity points and how they are calculated. Someone mentioned that if you work out how many calories are burned according to the machine you’re on (or Web sites), the activity points do not correspond. So for example, if an exercise burns 400 calories, you’re not given 6 or 7 activity points (but you would use that many points if you consumed 400 calories worth of food). With me so far? ;) So I was thinking, I may have a theory as to why activity points are calculated at a lower rate. You want to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight – so if you burn 400 calories, it doesn’t make sense to eat the same amount of calories. You want to eat *some* of those calories (as we all know, you must eat more if you exercise to keep your body fuelled), but not *all* of them or else you’re defeating the purpose. Does this make sense or am I just talking rubbish? I’m under deadline at work and have been a bit tired lately. ;) Cheers, Petal — http://petalww.tripod.com/journal.htm UK (WW At Home) 187 – January/99 154 – last week 153.6 – this week 140ish – goal

Yeah, exercise makes me hungry too.  And I eat to negate it. You have to wonder if it is a zero sum gain. My body is smarter than I am.  I try to outfox it by throwing a 2 hour bicycle ride at it.  I just get hungrier and eat more over the next couple of days.

Had an hour of cardio and then an hour of a pilates/yoga class on Wednesday am, and I just wanted to eat like crazy on Wed and Thurs. Two days of topping out at close to 2000 cals. Argh. Oh well, at least I’m building or maintaining my muscle. Karen

I’ve often thought about that very thing Dan.  I’ve decided that my long workouts are just not necessary to fitness.  Elite athletes can maintain their strength levels for up to 9 days between workouts before detraining becomes measureable.  I can go 7 days, which observation was quite a surprise to me.  I’ve now substituted intensity now where I used to use duration.  The elevated hunger is correspondingly briefer.

When I first lost a big amount of weight as a teenager, I rode my bike for miles and miles.  It actually seemed to regulate my appetite.  I did get a craving once in a while for fudge though, and I gave in to it, but I still lost weight. 30 years later, and I have discovered that all the carbs I was told to eat were the problem. Now I lose with low carb and just a little exercise. Gordy

Question:

Hi there, I am a male who is into fitness.  Presently, I work out with weights 3 times a week and do cardio 3 times per week as per the book; "Body for Life" by Wes Philips.  My question is whether anyone here does weights and also Pilates or Yoga?  I am thinking the Pilates/Yoga exercises would be the Yin and the weight training/cardio the Yang of my fitness routine.  My goals are to have a very toned body and be flexible.  I want to have a good posture and a youthful walk.  Thanks for any opinions.

Response:

I am thinking the Pilates/Yoga exercises would be the Yin and the weight training/cardio the Yang of my fitness routine.

I think you are right. Yoga will be a nice addition to your routine and will be a good counter to weight-lifting. You need to be flexible as well as strong. Actually, I think yoga is a wonderful accompaniment to any sport/activity, as it balances and realigns the body, especially if a certain group of muscles or one side of the body is overused in the sport.

Broke MY Stall! W/o water or exercise!

Question:

Folks, Got on the scale today and it said 147!  (And this is at the water-retaining end of the month!)  This is 5 pounds down from where I was at Thanksgiving. I’ve bought a new electronic scale which weighs in heavier than our old one. So for grins I got out the old scale. It said 145!  I haven’t weight that little in a good five years! As some of you may recall, I can’t drink the gallons of water recommended for this diet–I have had bladder problems in the past and my bladder is so small that I have to go every ten to fifteen minutes if I drink the recommended amounts.  I also can’t exercise because of a very bad back, though I walk all I can. I’d stalled from the end of Septemember until TG, but stuck with this WOE because it makes me feel good. On TG I carbed up a bit, on purpose but I’ve been sticking with 10 or less carbs per meal where possible (not counting fiber).  The carb up seems to be what was needed to shake things loose.   I think the argument that if calories are too low the body goes into famine mode is correct.  I haven’t been eating very much, so yesterday I baked up 22 chicken wings for the family and indulged heartily. At one point while cooking SO was horrified to discover me eating butter directly from the stick! This morning I was down 2 pounds.  Gotta love it!   — Jenny 170/147/135 Protein Power since 9/1/98 (adjusting starting weight for change of scale) ** remove the watchdog from the email address to eliminate spam guard

I am so glad to hear you broke your stall.  I started at about the same time you did and at the same weight you did.  I, too, am very near my ideal weight of 135.  I try to gag down as much water as I can but don’t make the recommended amount.  I also believe that you should not do any more exercising than you are willing to do for the REST OF YOUR LIFE if you want to maintain this weight loss.  I walk my dog, shop, do housework and yard work and that’s it.  If I have to add an hour of aerobics and weight lifting, forget it.  I know what happens.  I get injured or laid up in some way and HERE COMES THE WEIGHT BACK ON. My husband has also lost 30 pounds and we are starting to add back carbs so we can even out into "maintenance."  Wish us luck. Val in Boise

YES!!! YOU GO!! Great news! I also can’t exercise because of a very bad back, though I walk all I can.

Please doublecheck with your doctor on your exercise options.  Walking really isn’t the best exercise for your back — even with good shoes, you tend to jar stuff.  Ask him/her about swimming, pilates, yoga and resistance training! It’ll help you build up muscle — even in your back! — and it’ll help you sculpt your body better!
