To charge or not to charge: that is the question. Whether tis nobler to…

Question:

"Cushy" is highly relative. I eat, I have a place to live, I have clothes on my back. that is pretty good as far as I am concerned.

Whoooosh! Just had to duck to avoid getting caught by that u-turn. If the "cushy" you refer to in the original statement " I have a cushy and secure government job" is relative, why mention it? Let’s face it, you were bragging. Let’s be honest here, the reason you initially refered to your government job as "cushy" it’s because it’s an overpaid doddle, not because it keeps you above the poverty line. I have taught yoga for free when unemployed and living on handouts.

Cough.. splutter.. how is *that* free? You were performing a service that you could have charged for, yet you "chose" to have the taxpayer fund your existence! But you seem to think that you are adhering to some twisted set of principals. If you give to one stranger you feel it is acceptable to take from another…nice one!  For me, not everything has a dollar value, nor can or should all things can be reduced to a marketable commodity.

Yes, one can easily adopt that mentality when one is on the dole. It’s very easy to pick and choose what you feel has value. But you forget that the money you took from the state when you were in a position to actually pay into it, had value to someone else. What a load of hypocritical self righteous bullshit. You seem to be prone to overgeneralizations.

You seem prone to bouts of insanity mate " I taught ‘free’ Yoga  while poncing off the state" Why do you not do something about these government abuses that you have witnessed instead of whining, and painting all government employees with the same brush. Do not fool yourself, you know diddly squat about me.

Sure I don’t *know* you, but it’s amazing what one can pick up from a couple of Freudian slips. Paul

Response:

Perhaps hbkta teaches yoga for free out of love for mankind or for love of yoga. No. He teaches it because the tax that I pay the state affords him the luxury to teach Yoga for free, therefore **I** pay him to teach Yoga. He is doing no one any favours. I would rather he got a proper job as opposed to his "cushy" government job and charged for his time when he is ‘enlightening’ people.

Hi Paul. First off, I am not "enlightening"  anyone. That is beyond the scope and sphere of my activity. If there is any "enlightening" to be done, that would be up to Isvara, ParamaPurusa, ParamBrahma, … I think your opinion on this is rather hypocritical: on one hand he takes from society (with contempt)

It seems to me that the contempt you see is your own. I am grateful for the "cushy" job that I have lucked into. I suppose I could spend my free time smoking, drinking, lawn bowling, golfing or watching football and strippers. Instead I choose to teach yoga, sorry if that offends you, but hey, shit happens, get over it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – but hey, that’s OK as long as he provides free Yoga! I have worked closely with Civil servants and I am regularly appalled at the time and money the majority of them waste. To praise someone who effectively brags about his cushy civil service life is as shocking and ignorant as the as the perpetrator! Remember, his cushy existence, at our taxpaying expense, means that other people suffer or die due to a lack of money once all the civil servants have pissed it up the wall. Paul

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Perhaps hbkta teaches yoga for free out of love for mankind or for love of yoga. No. He teaches it because the tax that I pay the state affords him the luxury to teach Yoga for free, therefore **I** pay him to teach Yoga. Now you’re being unreasonable. Do you mean that no civil servant should be paid enough to have any spare time at all when he could, for intance, teach yoga? Or would you rather that governments were to be funded by some means other than taxation? Perhaps you are a nihilist, who wants to push the world into a a state of chaos where there is no government at all? Man alive! No, I object to the blokes language, I find it offensive that there are so many people who go without, so that civil servants like him can milk the system and boast about how "cushy" it is. I am not saying civil servants should be paid less, I am saying we could sack the majority of civil servants and no one would notice. He is doing no one any favours. I would rather he got a proper job as opposed to his "cushy" government job and charged for his time when he is ‘enlightening’ people. Anyone who is good at what he does for a living and likes to do it can be said to have a cushy job. Ooh come on! If a civil servant pops up and says he has a "cushy job" any right minded person knows *EXACTLY* where he is comming from! Don’t be ridiculous. I have dealt with people like him a thousand times over on a business level. They are ponces, nothing more nothing less. Notice how he isn’t here defending himself?

Hey Paul. I was not aware that I was under attack and that I needed to defend myself. "Cushy" is highly relative. I eat, I have a place to live, I have clothes on my back. that is pretty good as far as I am concerned. I do not drink, I do not smoke, I ride my bicycle to work in the summer and take public transportation in the winter. I buy new socks and new underwear, and with the exception of the uniform I am required to wear for work, the rest of my wardrobe is second hand clothes. Last time I checked my "cushy" job paid me a wage that put me at the national mean, meaning that there are just as many people making more $ than me as are making less. You are the same Paul who considered it naive to think that one could learn yoga for free, are you not? (referring to post on pilates or yoga thread) well, lots of people learn yoga for free. (Maybe it bugs you because you are not one of them?) lots of people teach it for free. I received my teacher training for free. and one of the conditions attached to that training was a traditional one of not charging anyone for instruction. I accepted the training, and the condition attached. What reason could you have to find that objectionable? I taught yoga for free before I got this ""cushy" job, when I had to work two jobs to support myself and family. I have taught yoga for free when unemployed and living on handouts. For me, not everything has a dollar value, nor can or should all things can be reduced to a marketable commodity. I enjoy teaching yoga, it is fun to do. keeps me off the streets and out of trouble, meet lots of nice people, some even get some benefit from the classes I give. I also find that regular teaching keeps my own practice focused and deepening. You seem to be prone to overgeneralizations. Why do you not do something about these government abuses that you have witnessed instead of whining, and painting all government employees with the same brush. Do not fool yourself, you know diddly squat about me. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – They all run for cover once someone points them out.  There are such jobs in private corporations too, not just in the government. Yea, but I can **choose** not to pay for them. And they are not taking from little old ladies, or people who need operations, or public transport, etc.. You sound as if you would not be satisfied until we all work day and night at minimum wages in jobs we neither like or are competent for, with the exception of yoga teachers, who should all be royally paid by their students. Dunno where you get that from. Quite the opposite is true, I think honest endeavour is entitled to name it’s price, if you don’t want to pay, buy the cheap stuff. I think your opinion on this is rather hypocritical: on one hand he takes from society (with contempt) but hey, that’s OK as long as he provides free Yoga! Remember, his cushy existence, at our taxpaying expense, means that other people suffer or die due to a lack of money once all the civil servants have pissed it up the wall. Maybe your perception of these things is a bit exaggerated. My perception comes from years of first hand experience. I can quote examples that will make your hair stand on end and would also make front page news!!! I have worked with The DTI, the Health Service, Customs and Excise and the Home Office to name a few and regularly witnessed the inherent culture of waste, incompetence and abuse of power. These people negatively affect our wellbeing with relentless consistency, but if they teach free Yoga all is forgiven? Turning to yoga to combat lifestyle diseases

Question:

YOGA IN PREGNANCY?  See below. Free yoga classes on the web: See www.yogaclass.com Obviously in person is best but… AN INCREDIBLE QUOTE… "About 30 percent of our diabetes patients no longer needed medicines after a period of regular yoga practice. Even the rest of the patients under our observation showed about 30-40 percent decrease in the required intake of medicines," Patel told IANS.

Thanks for reading, Sincerely, Todd Dr. Gastaldo PS  My thanks to GaramChai for posting the INCREDIBLE QUOTE in the post forwarded below… There was no mention in GaramChai’s post of Yoga in pregnancy.  Are there any pregnant women readers doing Yoga? How about Yoga BEFORE pregnancy?  I suspect Yoga makes birth easier.  Anyone care to comment? PREGNANT WOMEN: MDs are closing your birth canals up to 30% and it is EASY to allow your birth canal to OPEN the "extra" up to 30% – just squat, or stand, or go to hand-and-knees, or roll onto your side (some Yoga postures might be good birth postures) – but see the two simple WARNINGS in, Rule 302, Birth and Trigon/Anthem (Glasscock) – and ACOG’s Willett LeHew, MD http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/chiro-list/message/2252 Here’s GaramChai’s post…

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Turning to yoga to combat lifestyle diseases IANS Thursday, November 20, 2003 AHMEDABAD: Take a deep breath, calm your nerves and combat a range of lifestyle diseases from insomnia and diabetes to blood pressure and angina with yoga, just like 6,500 people did at a nine-day camp in this Gujarat city. Billed as one of the biggest yoga camps, the gathering included about 300 doctors who learnt yoga and pranayama to overcome their health problems without medicines or surgery. The camp, that concluded Wednesday, was organised in association with the health department of the Gujarat government, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the state chapter of the Indian Medical Association and the city-based Diabetes Education and Research Centre. "We usually associate yoga with religion and spirituality. But it also helps in fighting modern-day diseases. That was our focus for the camp," said Mayur Patel of the diabetes centre. A panel of 25 specialist doctors interacted with participants at the Sardar Stadium here during the camp that began at 5 a.m. every day. The two-hour programme every day included sessions on meditation, pranayama, "flexibility" exercises and yoga exercises, followed by question-and-answer sessions with Swami Adhyatmanand of the Shivanand Ashram who conducted the camp and other experts. And there were actually quantifiable results to convince the non-believers. "About 30 percent of our diabetes patients no longer needed medicines after a period of regular yoga practice. Even the rest of the patients under our observation showed about 30-40 percent decrease in the required intake of medicines," Patel told IANS. Four people with a history of diabetes were called on stage to share their experiences with the participants. Shambhu Prasad Singh, a central government official, told the gathering that he had such a severe case of diabetes that he could not even walk. "With regular practice of yoga, I can now not only walk, but run," he said. "Apart from the sheer exercise part of yoga which burns extra calories and reduces fat, the practice also balances hormones in the body. It produces counter-hormones, which keep insulin under check," Patel explained. Regular pranayama exercises also increase the capacity of heart and lungs and improve the immune system, he added. It all adds up to better protection against heart diseases, diabetes, asthma and depression. "Moreover, many of the modern-day diseases have a psychological aspect. As yoga provides mental peace, blood pressure becomes normal, leading to a healthier heart," he said. And here’s some good news for all those seeking to shed those extra pounds. "You can reduce by up to one-and-a-half kg in the nine-day camp itself," Swami Adhyatmanand told the participants. Most people went back satisfied. "I was suffering from vertigo and spondyliosis. I consulted many specialists but yoga has given me about 60 percent relief," said Amrita G. Christian, employed with an insurance company. Amit Mehta, a software professional, was suffering from chronic stomach problems. "I am feeling much better after the camp," he said. Another camp is scheduled to begin Sunday to cater to more enthusiasts. The Shivanand Ashram is also planning a 20-day residential teachers’ training camp. Question:

Do you have tanning beds in your section of the world?  Set the timer for an

If you are presuming that the HV will have traces "forever", in the ganglia, what can we speculate about the situation when the virus will flow and flow … and flow towards the skin in a continuous pace, due to the fine functioning of the skin It’s unclear what, if anything, you are talking about. where it will not be causing ulcers and will die if the heat is being applied on the skin’s surface.  (using a dryer with it’s dry heat just enough to kill a few layers of skins’ containing HV’s). Do you have tanning beds in your section of the world?  Set the timer for an hour, no make that two hours.  The ultraviolet light will surely cook the virus right out of you.  Don’t forget your eye protection. For how long, would you, eventually, make the assumption that the virus will run continuously from the ganglia towards the skin’s surface? The virus doesn’t "run continuously", but emerges periodically from its latent state.  The reasons and methods it uses to reactivate are not completely  understood. Nothing lasts forever. At the time of this writing, herpes does. On top of all these, of course, can be eventually, added the effect that a Kundalini flow of energy would impact this process of continuously producing of the HV’s. I read somewhere that the HSV virus is too small to be affected by the Kundalini flow. You know, yin and yang, alpha and omega, there is, eventually, always an opposite of everything and anything. I mean, the HV doesn’t have as such? The opposite of "thing" is "nothing".  HSV is a thing, like a table is a thing.  There is no opposite of "table", no anti-table that cancels out tables.  There is no opposite of HSV that cancels out HSVs. Even this super-evolved virus during some billions of years, MUST lack in something. Consider the idea of nature vs. nurture. No matter how perfect the nature is, our body can be nurtured to overcome its enemies. Science will indeed eventually find a way to circumvent or neutralize the HSV virus, but the human body itself, by itself, does not have such capabilities, and, as an aside, even if it did, you are unlikely to be the one to unlock that secret.      ;-) Our immunity system has the ability to deal, over time, in certain conditions, with all the viruses that it interfere with. We know that from biology class and with some help from us it can prevail against the virus. In the case of HSV, though, the virus hides itself inside the ganglia, where the body’s otherwise capable immune system does not reach.  The HSV virus, without a brain in its head, has truly "outsmarted" the great host, and there is nothing, at this point, that the "immunity system" can do about it. There is no such thing as an invincible virus. The virus has no intelligence, our mind-body has. Intelligence can guide one’s hands, but it cannot, of itself, direct the processes within a single cell. Intelligence is superior to any form of natural adaptation of a non-intelligent creature. Even if it’s not really alive. And Science *will* find a way to deal effectively with the HSV virus, but it *won’t* involve meditating about applying hot spoons to one’s exterior. There can be pointed out many other advantages that our mind-body can eventually make appeal as the quantum, subatomic energies, a whole variety of the chi, prana- you name it, involving, related theories that had flourished over millenniums. And Confucius flew to the moon at the top of a Saturn-V, yeah. P.S. On which side are you, I hope not on the virus’ side? Try the tanning bed for an hour or so and let us know how it goes.

Just a quick answer, firstly, in my understanding, the UV (ultraviolet light) will cause a wet-hot and we need dry-hot. It is also a dangerous choice to act using UV light upon an already overly stressed skin. Regarding the other issues, in my topic, the best way to tell is of course by trying it. I have doubts they will work together with famvir, acyclovir, which I can fairly say that it has an opposite effect on the flow I’ve been talking about, interfering with it. Up to this point it works great for me and I am very optimistic about it. I wish I had more time to dedicate it to my cure-(treatment as you wish). I don’t see, actually, how the treatment "would become immune" to the virus if it is not applied in a steady manner. Therefore, if I would fail to achieve my goal ( which is of course no outbreaks, ever), I would increase the intensity of the patterns that I am using. At this point I do not follow a particular standard way to stimulate the Kundalini flow, I, instead, follow a different, more basic, breathing techniques and other non-specific breathing exercises. I do not want to stress the oxigenation pathways due to the forcing of the breathing techniques. It can be dangerous to do so. I take it easy with all these breathing stuff. Cheers. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Take care, Mike

Take care, Mike

Response:

There is no big time way to wipe out the virus from a person’s system. Of course I would hope people do whatever works for them when it comes to trying to control the herpes flare ups and keep those from occurring.  But no matter what you use . . . the idea is to help the virus continue to sleep or hibernate

Angela, herpes virus is not a bear; it does NOT need to hibernate, neither to sleep. ;O) If you are presuming that the HV will have traces "forever", in the ganglia, what can we speculate about the situation when the virus will flow and flow … and flow towards the skin in a continuous pace, due to the fine functioning of the skin where it will not be causing ulcers and will die if the heat is being applied on the skin’s surface.  (using a dryer with it’s dry heat just enough to kill a few layers of skins’ containing HV’s). For how long, would you, eventually, make the assumption that the virus will run continuously from the ganglia towards the skin’s surface? Nothing lasts forever. On top of all these, of course, can be eventually, added the effect that a Kundalini flow of energy would impact this process of continuously producing of the HV’s. You know, yin and yang, alpha and omega, there is, eventually, always an opposite of everything and anything. I mean, the HV doesn’t have as such? Even this super-evolved virus during some billions of years, MUST lack in something. Consider the idea of nature vs. nurture. No matter how perfect the nature is, our body can be nurtured to overcome its enemies. Our immunity system has the ability to deal, over time, in certain conditions, with all the viruses that it interfere with. We know that from biology class and with some help from us it can prevail against the virus. There is no such thing as an invincible virus. The virus has no intelligence, our mind-body has. Intelligence is superior to any form of natural adaptation of a non-intelligent creature. Even if it’s not really alive. There can be pointed out many other advantages that our mind-body can eventually make appeal as the quantum, subatomic energies, a whole variety of the chi, prana- you name it, involving, related theories that had flourished over millenniums. Please read about the healing with the first chakra methods, you can find it in books, online, etc. By doing so, you will learn how to activate the Kundalini energy flow from the ganglia area so that the herpes virus from the base of the spine will be chased off the ganglia. By doing so, also mantaining our body’s immunitar prompt reaction to the escaped viruses outside, either on the skin surface where it usually causes OB’s (using a drier to kill viruses and pure oils like rose or mellisa to keep the skin fine easy to allow the flow of the herpes virus outside without causing a bacterial infection and such in which case it would cause ulcers of the skin) Make sure you eat raw garlic and ginger, preferred in a mixture of fruits like apples and billberries etc.) Provide your body with the natural antiviral teas like licorice, green tea pepermint etc. Eat hazel nuts (filberts) so that while the herpes virus is being activated, the skin also will be provided with the required protection from the consumption of these nuts (it is quite easy supported by the liver in comparison with other types of nuts). Nonetheless, stay as healthy as possible, do not drink alcohol etc. I repeat, in short time, by following this method, we will get cured from the HSV2. Anyone do yoga?

Question:

Hi, I’m new to the list. I’ve been reading all of your posts for a few days, and thought I’d jump in and ask a question. Does anyone here do yoga? I got some yoga tapes, and tried doing one. Seems like you’ve got to be VERY flexible to do this stuff. Is that true, or are there modified ways of doing it? Rachael p.s. Can someone fill me in on why drinking so much water is so important? and why you should drink an extra glass for every 25 lbs. overweight? Just curious. Thanks!

Response:

welcome to ASD Rachael, yep i do yoga.  you don’t have to be that flexible, that’s what the yoga will teach you.  i have a feeling you got some tapes from the living arts series though.  i’m partial to yoga zone (www.yogazone.com and no i’m not affiliated with them, just really enjoy their tapes) they have a tv series you can get the scheduling from the site also. anyway, another thing that helped me without feeling like i got thrown into yoga was reading the complete idiot’s guitde to yoga (or something close to that title wise). there are lots of ways to modify postures.  if you are sitting in a crosslegged position and doing a series of movements (such as potted palm series) you can use a blanket under your seat and if you have knee problems, use a rolled up towel so they don’t hurt as much.  the flexibility and tone video from yoga zone (in addition to all their tapes actually) will go through this in the intro part of the tape and will also try to illustrate the way breathing should look/feel. the tv series can be in the middle of just about anywhere…so it may be a bit difficult if you are just starting out with yoga. should you, by chance, like in the manhattan area in new york, you will be able to get to one of their 4 studios to learn the yoga with an instructor. the first time i got into yoga was with an instructor at my gym.  i was lucky, she really knew what she was doing.  the current yoga instructor doesn’t know what she is doing and if she’s not careful could easily make someone hurt themselves while taking her class…but i digress. the key with yoga is that a posture should not hurt, your breathing should be easy and the form is more important than anything else.  it doesn’t matter if you can’t touch your toes right away…what is important however is that your neck is relaxed, your back is straight and nothing hurts.  by hurting i don’t mean the "good pain" from a stretching feeling, i do mean actual pain as in doing it does not feel comfortable or good for that matter. hope that has helped a bit. Julie

WOW!! Thanks for the info. And you’re right, I got the Living Arts tapes…you must be psychic! I noticed that I was almost forcing myself to breathe the way the lady was instructing to do. I mean when she said inhale, often I’d be exhaling, so I’d switch to inhaling. I guess I’ll get the hang of it with a little practice. Rach

Welcome Rachael! Julie gave you a pretty good comprehensive response, so I won’t belabor any of the points she made.  I also do yoga, and have several of the Living Arts tapes, a couple Lilias tapes, a Kathy Smith tape (that one’s tough — requires some stamina), a Denise Austin tape (fast-paced), and just got a couple of the Yoga Zone tapes that Julie recommended.  And, like Julie, I would also recommend The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Yoga. Our local health club also offers free yoga classes as part of the monthly membership, and those were very helpful, particularly the one that had an older female instructor, because she was very careful to show modifications that should be made if you had difficulty with the poses.  (Again, similar to what Julie described.)  Both instructors there emphasized the importance of not pushing yourself, of listening to your body, of breathing.  If you have an opportunity to attend a few classes somewhere, you should try it — it IS different than trying to follow the pace of a video. You might also check to see if your library or local video store has some different tapes you can try.  I don’t know which tapes you have, so it’s hard to advise you — all of them are a little different in approach, pace and style.  And frankly, all the tapes have instructors who are far more flexible than I am!  That’s the value of attending a class if you can — it’s kind of nice to be able to try this stuff next to other people like you! not a psychic at all. just someone who has seen lots of people having difficulty with their tapes. (me being the main person here)… the way I see living arts, it’s good for those who know what they are doing..for everyone else…just shoot them now, don’t bother putting a bad taste in their mouth’s for yoga. the complete idiot’s guide describes the breathing well, and so does yoga zone. the way my instructor showed us how to do it was a bit easier so I’ll just post it here. lay on your back in a relaxed position.  close your eyes.  do not breathe through your mouth.  as you breath in, feel the air accumulating in your belly first, then once your belly is full, fill your lungs with it.  upon exhaling, empty your lungs first, then the belly.  while breathing, try to notice if you are "scrunching" up your shoulders upon inhaling…you don’t want to do this.  go as far as you are comfortable.  the idea is to really concentrate on how you are breathing…imagine the air going through your lugs as a wave–hope this makes sense. the way yoga zone describes it to the best of my memory (haven’t watched their method lately): (while sitting in a comfortable cross legged position) place your hands on your lower rib cage, thumb in the back, fingers in the front.  as you inhale feel the ribcage expand, upon exhaling, fell it contract.  again try not to scrunch up your you shoulders and keep your neck relaxed. to make sure that you are exhaling all the way, you may want to get on your hands and knees (hands under shoulders, knees under hips).  as you inhale arch your back, look up at the ceiling as much as you can without straining anything.  as you exhale, arch your back (like a cat when it stretches), bring your chin to your chest, contract your stomach muscles and try to force as much air out of you as you can.  doing this a few times really makes you aware of how little you really do use your lungs on a daily basis. this is also an actual series of postures, I just don’t remember the name…maybe cat & cow? *shrug* anyway, hope this has helped you. if you do decide to try out some of the yoga zones and aren’t in the greatest flexibility you may want to start with the flexibility and tone video-it’s a challenge don’t get me wrong, but it’s the easiest–I think it’s pale blue.  the next least difficult (in my opinion) which does not involve great balance (queen of falling on her butt speaking) is the conditioning and stress relief, it’s a blueish green (dare I say seafoam?) package.  following that, you can go with the yellow, which is an intro to yoga.  they are all for beginners…I just don’t think they put them in the best order sometimes, but that’s just my opinion.  they also have a meditation video with two programs, a less challenging one followed by a more difficult one.  depending on if you like the slow and gentle instruction or the more challenging stuff (hubby and I always argue about this, he needs to challenge where I need the form more than the challenge) if you want to continue discussing this, you can e-mail me directly. Julie

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – WOW!! Rach

As Julie mentioned, yoga is a progressive activity and it shouldn’t hurt.  If it helps, close your eyes and listen to the description the yoga leader is verbalizing, and do only what your body allows.  (For me, at least, I’m less likely to do something stupid and force my body if I’m just, say, moving my body a bit more rather than comparing myself to the "good" yoga students who can get their heels all the way down on "downard dog")  There are two places to keep your mind: Do you have the fundamental positioning correct? And how does it feel? The fundamental positioning information can come by a book or through classes. I’ve had  a few yoga instructors, and some are better than others as far as feedback and stuff. Also, since there are a couple different yoga styles, different books can give conflicting information — try different methods of positioning to feel which ones work best for you. The second part — How does it feel? — is really important because first off, you should be sensitive to your body to make sure you’re not forcing it.  Don’t bounce.  Don’t strain.  Don’t hurt yourself.  Take the position, feel it, and if you can, go just a little farther.  Everyone is unique, so take each position by itself.  I know I can do balancing positions even longer than some of my instructors once I’ve had a little practice, but my pelvis and knees are too stiff to do many of the triangle and floor-warrior poses.  Also, the "how does it feel" part really helps you focus on your own body — and that will eventually include your breathing.  It’ll take some time to get used to it, but it’ll all feel more natural as you practice and do it more often. Have fun!

For someone just starting, the best book I’ve ever seen and used is: Richard Hittleman’s Yoga : 28 Day Exercise Plan Sorry, no ISDN, but most of the big online book stores seem to have it. Um, I do Iyengar-style yoga for fitness. It does NOT require that you be flexible, only happy to be there. I can’t bend so well, I lack balance, and I have no strength where it matters but I still get a huge amount of satisfaction from yoga. yukari the pretzle-girl

Hi there.  When I first started doing yoga, I found a couple of "props" to be helpful.  The are: 1. a yoga strap, 2. a yoga block, and 3. a big exercise ball (those kind that you can sit on and do stretches).  The yoga strap helped me get more flexible and allowed me to imitate the poses more closely without needing to hold my foot over my head.  The yoga block helps with balance as something nice to lean on.  And the exercise ball helped me the most with some of the inverted poses.  My arms are really weak, so I couldn’t lie on my back and push myself up into the arch, so how I started out was to lie on the exercise ball and practice pushing myself up into the arch for longer and longer periods of time.  Since the ball was there, I wasn’t as worried when my arms got wobbly. Hope this help.  And I agree with whomever mentioned the yoga zone tapes.  They are very relaxing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, I’m new to the list. Response:

getting the actual strap and the other props may be more overwhelming to a person starting out with yoga, so a men’s tie (preferably not one of their favorites) and an empty cookie tin or a pack of tuna work real well as a prop if you don’t want to go out and buy anything. those balls are really nice, but those too are expensive, although you can use them for crunches if your back is a bit weak.  a good substitute is a kids ball from a toy store–a big one. (i’m the one who suggested yoga zone btw) Julie

free hatha yoga classes

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I often hear this quoted, that hatha yoga is suppose to be free of charge. But I never hear the follow-up sentence, "To those who are worthy." Hatha yoga, as taught in studios, schools, community recreation centers & living rooms across the USA is more a physical practice than a spiritual one. As such, it is a service.  Therefore, a fee is charged. True hatha yoga, from a master to a disciple, is not paid for.  In 27 years of practice, I have taught freely on one occasion.  All others pay a fee. Om Santi … Sakti Lalita

In other words, the so-called Hatha Yoga "physcial practice" is not worthy to be properly defined as a "spiritual one," and the general public is not worthly to be told the truth about what is Yoga; i.e., the spiritual/religious disciplines of Sanatan Dharma/Hinduism. You should be ashamed of yourself for abusing these sacred teachings and misleading the public.

LIFE SCIENCE MEDICAL CENTER SUDHIR BAGGA, M.D. 1970 SOUTH PROSPECT AVE REDONDO BEACH, CA 90277 PHONE: (310) 543-9036 March 15, 1999 Dear Colleague:  This personal invitation is to introduce a select group of physicians and health professionals to a newly developed software product from Life Science Medical Center: As you know, lately there has been an increasing interest in the combination of traditional western medical practice and natural complementary healing treatments. Because of the vast array of non-traditional approaches, there is much confusion about which treatments are truly effective.  Integrative medicine, which I practice, is a discipline that incorporates those therapies which can be scientifically validated. My own background has been in family practice and geriatrics and I am board certified in both specialties.  I was educated in India and England and completed my postgraduate training in family practice in UCLA family practice program. I have been in practice in southern California for 20 years and have been promoting the health and wellness of my patients by combining alternative, natural therapies with conventional practice of medicine. I believe the practice of Integrative Medicine represents the purest essence of family practice which addresses the whole person: body, mind and spirit.  I have created a VHS video tape

Teaching Yoga in Jails/Prisons

Question:

I have a tape by Ram Dass were he talks about "Turning prisons into ashrams". How people into prisons can be turn into "high" beings. He doesn’t go into into in too much depth but he does say its a worthwhile thing to do. The tape is:     Ram Dass: On right livelihood, Work, Money, and Burnout. 1989 Retreats     1992 Hanuman Foundation Tape Library     524 San Anselmo Avenue, San Anselmo, CA 94960.     1 (800) 248-1008     ISBN: 0-9628878-1-1 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Is there anyone that can help me.  I have found great peace in my life through Yoga.  (Iyengar)  I would like to know more about peoples experiences teaching in Jails. Bentley Lein wrote << I would like to know more about peoples experiences teaching in Jails.  Any information or resources would be appreciated. **  One of my students is a psychotherapist who has been practicing yoga for 15 years.  She submitted a proposal to the GA Department of Corrections to teach yoga & qigong to prisoners.  Her thesis is that these practices will produce long-standing calming effects within the inmate population.  Subsequently leading to a productive citizen.  It took her two years to write the proposal. Two more years before it was read by the Board of Corrections (BC).  Another 18-months before myself – a BC certified & approved hatha yoga instructor, & a BC certified & approved qigong instructor were brought in to demonstrate the exercises that would typically be included in a class for the inmate population.   As a female, my class was summarily denied.  The qigong instructor, though male, was approved because he is also an akido master – the BC figured that in a worse-case scenerio he would be able to fend for himself until the guards arrived. I know of yoga organizations that hold meditations & lectures inside prisons – Sivananda comes to mind – but none that I know of who teach hatha yoga. A few months back ‘Yoga Journal’ highlighted such activity – to a small (3-person) group of low-risk prisoners – with guards present at all times.   I concur with my student, that hatha yoga could be a calming & long-term positive experience for incarcerated students; however, there is a great deal of bureaucratic resistence that needs first be hurdled in order to create an atmosphere of change.
