Question:

You know what the biggest misconception is? People assume, if your overweight you eat too much, and not if your overweight you’ve EATEN too much. See granted at one point it is true, you ate too much, but if cutting down and sticking to staple foods is all one needs to shed kilos then I’d like to know why Tae Bo cassettes are selling like mad! The fact is this, cutting down will only prevent further gain, it won’t erase what is already there … so you said Yoga can … good. Just had to clear up that misconception nearly everone in the world has. ;)

Yes, it can. No doubt you have noticed that many yogins (and yoginis) are emaciated by most people’s standards and yet are actually in excellent health. Are you clinically obese or just self-conscious?

Your intuition is sound — classes most often are nothing more than the hopeful attempting to lead the ignorant (which you might not be;  who were you in previous lives?). Stay healthy and modest.

Yes, regular excercise of yoga can help you to gain control over your eating habits and to aid digestion. There are special postures for this – a qualified yoga tieacher can help you.

I lost weight when I finally decided I didn’t care about my weight and was interested in my health.  Yoga was part of this, and it works.  You will become more in touch with your body, and will be less likely to want to eat garbage food. My body is in its best shape ever, even from when I was doing hours of strenuous aerobics a week.  Now I just do yoga and walk a lot.

Iyengar states that all of the standing poses will lead to weight loss, I have experienced such a result. Shoulder stands will stimulate the thyroid which may also help. L.M.

You can lose weight doing some forms of yoga like Ashtanga. Or you could make a pretty hefty workout with repeated Sun Salutations for 20-45minutes a day. However, to do either of these requires a certain level of training under a qualified teacher. You probably won’t lose weight as a beginner unless yoga is an adjunct to an already established cardio program.

Yoga can be used for weight loss if you are participating in Ashtanga or you could do 20-45minutes of Sun Salutations daily. However, both of these options require a certain level of physical accomplishment under the teaching of a qualified instructor which can take 6 weeks to a year depending on where you are when you begin yoga, any injuries or diabilities, etc. You probably won’t lose much weight doing Hatha alone as a beginner.

Power yoga uses an incredible number of calories. Videos to try are Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason and Mark Blanchard’s Power Yoga videos. They are a true workout! Bryan Kest has some wonderful videos like "Tone" which can help too. One has to do yoga regularly to see a benefit. http://www.yoga.com has videos. Namaste, Shannon

Yoga can be used to lose weight if you are practicing a vigourous form such as Ashtanga. You could also do 20-45 minutes of Sun Salutations daily. Both of these options require a certain level of understanding and physical ability as far as yoga asanas and vinyasas are concerned. If you are a beginner you probably won’t lose too much weight doing yoga alone. GStanger
