YOGA Links??
Question:
Indigo, I did a search on yahoo for Bryan Kest, and came up with a website (I think this link was in another post also), http://www.poweryoga.com/bryan.htm. Anyway, this website has 3 videos of Bryan’s that look interesting. Do you know anyone who’s tried any of them? I am considering ordering them (they’re $14 each, on this site anyway), but would like to hear some opinions. Thanks, Cathy P.S. I haven’t done any searches to see if they are available at a lower price elsewhere…maybe that’s what I’ll do next.

. It’s not a lame question. Why do you think I started doing it? To get enlightened? Madonna and Courtney do a type of hatha yoga called Ashtanga, in which each posture is connected to the other through a mediating posture, called a vinyasa. It’s like doing regular standing and floor stretches, but after you do one you jump up and do a jumping jack, and then jump back into position. You sweat like a quarter horse doing this thing. Madonna and Courtney are not getting those sinewy arms by breathing through their eyes, let me tell you. If you are interested in this type of yoga, there is a book called Power Yoga by Beryl Bender Birch. It’s quite popular, but it could be hard to follow the routine, since it’s a very active series and you have to hook all of her pictures together. If you want a good sweaty ashtaga workout there is also a tape that I’ve heard is pretty good by this guy named Bryan Kest. He’s online. Good lookin yogi, this Bryan. There are other more active series that work in different ways. I do Bikram, which is active but more a "therapeutic" type of routine. I’ve heard Kripalu is active. As soon as I’m done with my year of yoga therapy I’m thinking of starting with Bryan Kest in Ashtanga –but if you’re lucky and live in california or new york you could probaby also just find an instructor. Can someone please post any information on YOGA? Ive been seeing alot of postings on the effects but no actual links. Thank you!! BeLLa: 293/258/?? Hubby: 370/343/250 Atkins together since 9/27/99 "It’ll be a wonderful day when my outside finally meets up with my INSIDE"

There’s not much out there. There are several sites that are basically commercial, that want to sell us yoga mats and books and tapes and so forth, several that want you to come and turn over your worldly goods to be in their ashrams, and one newsgroup — alt.yoga. Alt.yoga is not exactly a happening place — there are lots of people there who like to evangelize about hinduism and following the path and the Clear Perception of The Atma and so forth. That’s not really necessary to get the health benefits of yoga and it tends to confuse. I would bring the whole hindu religion down on my head if I suggested that you don’t really need to breathe through your eyes and try to levitate to trim your waistline, but it’s true. So — you can go to the library. You can go to a bookstore. You can order tapes. The practice of yoga can truly revolutionize your life, and any solid book or tape posture series is enough to get you started. Really, that, and a commitment to stick with it will demonstrate what a million informational websites probably couldn’t do as well. Indigo

Indigo, do you know what kind of yoga do Madonna and Courtney Love do? I keep hearing about it, but no one mentions that name of it. A lot of other celebrities rave about it, too. ~Bethany (sorry if this seems like a lame Q
Response:
it’s not that they’re not worth reading — it’s just that there is a lot of lecturing going on. For example, for every helpful post you’ll hear twenty — well, if you’re only interested in "gymnastics’ you might as well just take an aerobics class. However, there are helpful people there and several who are wholistic practitioners who might have some suggestions about other problems, such as depression or low energy. YMMV, really. Indigo

Indigo is right about all the religious aspects being confusing for a newbie. There are dozens of different types of yoga (bhakti, karma, kundalini, ashtanga, pranayama, hatha, etc.). Most of what Westerners practice is called Hatha yoga, which is the poses and exercises without any of the deeper aspects — disdainfully called "gym class" by the more spiritually-oriented types (not just hindu). That can of course get into evangelism. Hatha yoga is like a Catholic church with the choir and the candles and no mention of God. But for tummy-tightening, it’s your game. Thanks, alicat, the reason I asked is because they both look so good (Courtney Love especially), and every time a reporter asks why, they mention yoga.. Courtney love said a few times specifically that the yoga she was doing "made her prettier" and she really DOES look prettier (tighter skin, glowy)… Not like I follow these two, but I do read a lot o’ Spin and Rolling Stone. LOL, I’ll just buy a beginners (hatha) yoga tape and try it
Thanks for answering… ~Bethany – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ll answer, just cause I happen to know about Courtney Love – she follows the instruction of a woman whose name I forget (there was a feature article in Vogue magazine about this), who seems to teach a number of celebrities. Yoga comes in lots of forms: the word itself means "path". So you can do a "bhakti yoga", which would be like a religion (such as Christianity or Krishna consciousness) that emphasizes devotional worship, or a "jnana yoga" which would be an intellectual approach to enlightenment (like Buddhism for instance). The type of yoga that emphasizes physical postures and exercises is called "hatha yoga", so do a search on amazon.com or whatever bookseller you prefer for books about hatha yoga. You really don’t need a celebrity "guru" to get started. There is also a pretty good yoga instruction program on PBS if you need the example of a person to follow, and many local YMCAs and rec centers have hatha yoga classes too….look in your yellow pages. Madonna was into kabbala (mystical Hebrew numerology) last I heard, but will probably be doing something else soon enough…. adios, alicat 144 or so/108/110 atkid since 4/1/98 and forever!

Hi Cathy, I thought I jump in here, since I have Volume 1 in the series. It’s quite a hard workout, nothing like any other tape (yoga or not) I’ve seen … and I’ve "seen" a few … lol. Anyhow, just know that Ashtanga is pretty much "hard core" yoga. I use it once a week, and in the beginning it all just seemed quite impossible, but now I’m shocked at far I can bend and twist
So far I’m not tired of the tape, yet! and I have a looong, loooong way to go! …. but when I do there’s more (i.e vol 2 & 3, etc). On the weekdays I do "AM yoga" by Rodney Yee. This is on the complete opposide side – very slow, easy movements, gentle. About a 15 min workout. He makes several other Tapes also. Well, that’s what I’ve tried, and I would recommend these – depends on what kind of workout your looking for. Btw, maybe try ebay or something similar – possibly a better price than at the stores/websites. Hope my ramblings helped a little
